Simón Pedro Pereira, Master Blender at Providencia Bulk Rum: Four Decades Defining Identity, Tradition, and Excellence in Rum
With more than 45 years dedicated to the craft of rum, Simón Pedro Pereira stands as one of the most influential figures in Latin American rum production. As Master Blender at Providencia Bulk Rum (Ingenio Providencia) and a founding force behind its development, he has shaped the company’s identity from the ground up. His career spans the full spectrum of rum creation—from selecting cane varieties and yeast strains to overseeing fermentation, distillation, barrel programs, aging, and the development of premium profiles for global markets.
Simón’s work reflects a lifelong commitment to authenticity, tradition, and quality. His expertise has guided the evolution of rums ranging from widely consumed spirits to super‑premium expressions, always with a focus on preserving character and crafting products with a true sense of place.
TRL: What was the biggest challenge you faced in launching your rum brand, and how did you overcome it?
The greatest challenge was developing aged spirits with outstanding sensory profiles that could stand out in a highly competitive premium category without compromising authenticity.
We overcame the challenges by staying true to our values: a passion for quality, an honest history, and a product that speaks for itself. Perseverance and patience were key.
TRL: How do you see the rum market evolving in the next 5-10 years, and what trends do you think will shape the future of the industry?
The market will become more educated and demanding, seeking authentic premium rums with clear origin and transparent processes.
TRL: Can you share a personal experience or moment that significantly influenced your brand’s direction?
During a technical tasting, I realized that the true value of rum lies in invisible decisions, fermentation time, distillation cuts, and interaction with wood. Since then, we prioritize process over volume and identity over trends.
TRL: How do you balance tradition with innovation in your approach to rum-making or marketing?
I deeply respect tradition. Innovation should enhance it, never replace it.
TRL: What are some recent initiatives or products you’ve launched that have been particularly impactful?
We have collaborated with producers and bottlers who have been well received in local and international markets. Mainly in the Colombian and European markets, with a focus on Colombian rums of the highest quality.
TRL: How do you educate consumers about your rum, and what’s the most important lesson they should take away?
Today, there are various alternatives. I usually promote rum through tastings, events, and digital content, emphasising its history, craftsmanship, and experience.
TRL: How do you manage quality and consistency as your brand grows and enters new markets?
Quality is non-negotiable. Sustainable growth is more important than compromising the profile of the rum.
TRL: What is your long-term vision for your rum brand, and how do you see your role in the evolution of the rum industry?
To establish Providencia Bulk Rum as a respected brand known for quality and consistency. My legacy is contributing through education and respect for origin.
TRL: What’s one piece of educational advice you would give rum lovers to better understand the spirit?
I would recommend that you try it without prejudice and discover the layers that each rum offers. It’s a process to be enjoyed!
