Mount Gay Cognac Cask: A Bold New Expression from the Master Blender Collection

Mount Gay, the historic Barbadian distillery with over 300 years of craftsmanship, has unveiled an exceptional new release: Mount Gay Cognac Cask. This edition redefines the Master Blender Collection by aging entirely in French oak Cognac barrels—a first for the brand.

A New Approach to Maturation Sets This Rum Apart

While Mount Gay traditionally ages its rums in a blend of bourbon and Cognac barrels, this release takes a different route. Master Blender Trudiann Branker opted to skip bourbon entirely, allowing the rum to spend all four years resting in ex-Cognac casks. This shift in strategy adds complexity and elegance, offering a unique profile that fans haven’t tasted before.

The barrels came from Rémy Martin, a natural synergy since both Mount Gay and the French Cognac house fall under the Rémy Cointreau portfolio.

Branker Explains the Vision Behind Mount Gay Cognac Cask

In a statement to Robb Report, Branker shared the intention behind this bold new release:

“By aging rum completely in Cognac casks, we’ve allowed the interaction between the rum and the cask to bring forward a unique profile. The French oak imparts notes of dried fruits, vanilla, and oak, while the tropical climate of Barbados enhances the fruit-forward character of the rum. This is an elegant and unique release that showcases the best of both traditions.”

Column Still Rum Brings a Distinctive Fruity Profile

At Mount Gay, distillers use both pot and column stills to create a wide range of rum styles. For Mount Gay Cognac Cask, Branker selected rum distilled in a column still, emphasizing its naturally fruity notes. She bottled the expression at a robust 58% ABV (116 proof), preserving its intensity and complexity.

Tasting this new expression reveals more than just fruit. You’ll notice layers of vanilla, dark chocolate, raisin, fig, banana, and brown sugar, all wrapped in a silky texture. Due to the high proof, adding a splash of water helps open up the flavors and reduce the heat for a smoother sip.

Mount Gay Cognac Cask Offers a Rare Collectible Experience

Rum collectors and enthusiasts should act quickly. Mount Gay produced only 6,276 bottles of this limited edition worldwide. With a suggested retail price of $210, this collectible spirit already has a strong demand. You can check your local specialty liquor store or visit ReserveBar to explore this release and previous editions of the Master Blender Collection.

Why Mount Gay Cognac Cask Deserves a Spot on Your Shelf

This release demonstrates Mount Gay’s commitment to innovation while staying true to tradition. By using Cognac casks exclusively, Branker crafted a spirit that bridges Barbadian rum-making with French oak refinement. The result? A world-class rum that’s rich, complex, and unforgettable.

With Mount Gay Master Blender Collection Cognac Cask Expression, the brand continues to set the standard for what’s possible in premium rum.
