José Araujo: The Art of Rum in the Hands of the Master Blender of Alcoholes y Añejos Monagas

Joselina Rodriguez Osuna

With over three decades dedicated to the world of rum, José Araujo has established himself as one of the most recognized figures in the industry. He is currently Master Blender at Alcoholes y Añejos Monagas, the company responsible for the production of Ron Calazan. His experience spans the entire rum production cycle: from sugarcane and molasses to fermentation, the various distillation techniques, aging, and the creation of blends that give rise to unique products. His 32-year career has allowed him to develop a deep understanding and a comprehensive vision of the art and science behind a good rum.

One trend that will shape the future of the industry is the growing demand for high-quality rums. Consumers are increasingly looking for authentic, well-defined, and more complex products.

I also believe that the rum market will see greater diversification in terms of styles and flavor profiles, considering that consumers are experimenting with different rums, whether white, aged, or extra-aged, which allows for a greater variety of options on the market. It is worth noting the growing popularity of rum in mixology, as bartenders experiment with different rums to create innovative cocktails, leading to greater demand for high-quality rums.

TRL: How do you balance tradition with innovation in your approach to rum-making or marketing?

Tradition is fundamental in rum production, as the fermentation, distillation, and aging processes that have been used for years are crucial to creating the distinctive flavor and character of rum. For example, Venezuelan rum maintains its essence due to its geographical location, as it has two climatic seasons, winter and summer. This means that in areas with high temperatures, the aging process is different from that in other countries.

Another way I see tradition being balanced with innovation is a through collaboration between experimental producers and master blenders, generating a fusion of empirical knowledge with techniques and innovations that allow for the creation of authentic and original products.

TRL: How do you educate consumers about your rum, and what’s the most important lesson they should take away?

To educate consumers about rum, I believe it is essential to start with the history and culture behind this spirit, to understand that it has a rich heritage dating back centuries, where its production and consumption are closely linked to the history and culture of the Caribbean islands and other regions.

One of the most important lessons consumers must learn is that rum is not just an alcoholic beverage, but also a cultural experience, a product that reflects the identity and tradition of its country of origin.

TRL: How do you manage quality and consistency as your brand grows and enters new markets?

The quality and consistency of a growing brand entering new markets is maintained by ensuring quality standards in raw materials and ensuring that all production processes are followed, including everything from design to customer service.

TRL: What is your long-term vision for your rum brand, and how do you see your role in the rum’s evolution?

The long-term vision for my rum is to be a leader in high-quality production that reflects the rich heritage and culture of our country.

In terms of the role in the liquor’s evolution, I would like my rums to be an example of how to create a high-quality product that is accessible and attractive to a wide range of consumers.

TRL: What’s one piece of educational advice you would give rum lovers to better understand the spirit?

My advice to rum lovers is to learn to appreciate the unique flavor and character of each type of rum, considering that there are many types, each with its flavor profile and characteristics, such as white rums, aged rums, and extra-premium rums.

It is also a passion to learn about its processes, the selection of raw materials, fermentation, distillation, and aging, and then explore the creation of various cocktails using this wonderful product.

TRL: How can people learn more about you? Website? Social media page?
