}The Isle of Barra Distillers has introduced its latest creation, drawing inspiration from the “darker, more mystical side” of its island home. According to The Spirits Business, the new Isle of Barra rum features dark forest flavors, bright orange peel, and a mellow coconut finish. This combination aims to evoke the wild landscape of the Outer Hebrides in every glass.
Experts at The Spirits Business describe the nose as offering a “soft coastal character” that transitions into “ripe black cherry and dark berry fruit.” Additionally, layers of caramel and vanilla provide a smooth aromatic base. On the palate, rich black cherry takes center stage, while the Isle of Barra rum concludes with a finish that feels “long and warming.”
CEO and co-founder Michael Morrison expressed immense pride in this 38% ABV release. Speaking to The Spirits Business, Morrison noted that “Black Forest is a rum designed not just to be tasted, but to be discovered.” He further characterized this Isle of Barra rum as “exciting, rich and absolutely delicious,” attributing its depth to the wild island environment.
To highlight the spirit’s versatility, the brand suggests using the Isle of Barra rum in premium cocktails. Their signature recommendation, the Black Forest Rum Old Fashioned, pairs 50ml of the spirit with black cherry syrup and aromatic bitters. This serve enhances the dark fruit notes that define the new expression, which retails for £36 (US$48).
Michael Morrison and his wife, Katie, founded the distillery in 2017 and have overseen significant recent success. The Spirits Business reports that revenues for Isle of Barra rum rose by 13.5% in 2025, supported by a 24% year-on-year increase in production. Furthermore, the producers recently invited whisky enthusiasts to invest in casks and equity as they prepare to open a new distillery facility in 2027.
As the brand scales its operations, this latest addition strengthens its position in the craft spirits market. By blending traditional island identity with innovative flavors, the Isle of Barra rum continues to attract a global audience. Whether enjoyed neat or in a cocktail, the Black Forest expression represents the next chapter in the distillery’s ambitious growth story.
