TRL: What does the rum mean for you? What made you fall in love with rum and when did it happen?
Rum is a gift of nature. In my adolescent years, I used to see my father and grandfather celebrate all the important occasions in the family with a Flor de Caña drink, that’s how I was initially introduced to rum and fell in love with it right away. Then, in 1997, when I had the opportunity to join the Flor de Caña team, it was a dream come true.
TRL: Three essential characteristics that define the rum according to your perspective.
Beautiful moments in life, premiums, and versatility for mixing.
TRL: What is the most important contribution you have made in the rum industry?
Introducing thousands of consumers globally to Flor de Caña’s world of sustainably crafted, ultra-premium-aged rums. Flor de Caña is deeply appreciated by rum connoisseurs as a leader in sustainable practices within the industry and as a renowned producer of some of the world’s finest rums. I’m very proud of sharing Flor de Caña’s rich history and the secrets of this wonderful spirit, with a great personality and a very bright future.
TRL: Benefits that the rum industry has given you.
The opportunity to travel around the world get to know amazing people and be awarded, for the first time in the industry, as the World’s Best Rum Ambassador.
TRL: What´s another thing you are passionate about, in addition to rum? Why?
Reading and learning every day, to be enriched by the wisdom of our clients and consumers.
TRL: What is your favorite place for drinking rum.
Friday is a wonderful day, especially if it’s 5pm, watching a sunset, listening to your favorite music, and spending time with dear friends. Who could ask for anything more?
TRL: Favorite drink + Recipe
I have two favorite drinks: Flor Old Fashion and Flor Sparkling.
Flor Old Fashioned: Flor de Caña 12 Year Rum, one tablespoon of sugar, two drops of bitters and an orange twist.
Flor Sparkling: Flor de Caña 12 Year Rum, sparkling water and an orange twist.
TRL: Why is it important to educate the rum consumer?
The more they know about rum, the more they will enjoy and appreciate what they are consuming. They will become rum lovers.
TRL: Any tips to train the palate and taste a good premium rum?
I always recommend enjoying your favorite drink depending on the weather, that will determine if you can enjoy it neat, on the rocks or in a cocktail. It’s also interesting to do pairings with good food or cigars, the rum is a great and versatile companion for different occasions and to have fun.
TRL: How can rum contribute to improving the crisis in some countries?
Sustainable development and growth have been a core value of our brand since its beginnings in 1890. We are strongly committed to implementing a business model with a profound impact that ensures the well-being of workers, the community and the environment. We are proud of growing with our people, for example, we provide workers and their families with free health and education since 1913.
TRL: Is the commitment to sustainable development the key of success for the permanence of the rum industry in the world? Why?
Sustainability is part of Flor de Caña’s DNA. We are extremely proud of being sustainably produced, from field to bottle, and we are the world’s only Carbon Neutral and Fair Trade certified spirit. We offset all carbon emissions during our production process and we comply with over 300 rigorous labor, social and environmental standards. Rum congresses are a wonderful opportunity to meet with a lot of interesting people. I enjoy a lot meeting all my ambassador colleagues, with whom I share the same values and have become extraordinary friends.
