AUGUST 2025 – Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) has unveiled the second expression in its high-ester blend series: El Dorado Port Mourant / Diamond High Ester Rum. This follows the acclaimed 2024 debut of the La Bonne Intention / Diamond High Ester release, which rum enthusiasts praised for its complexity and distinctive profile.
As global interest in unique rum styles accelerates, DDL continues to deliver rare opportunities to explore the depth of Demerara craftsmanship. High ester rums stand out for their concentrated fruity and floral aromas, created by elevated levels of esters—aromatic compounds that define their unmistakable character.
Distilled in 2014 and aged for 10 years in once-used bourbon barrels, the new El Dorado Port Mourant / Diamond High Ester Rum arrives at cask strength, offering an unfiltered taste of its heritage.
The Port Mourant Double Wooden Pot Still began its journey in 1732 at the Port Mourant Estate, producing a robust rum once favored by the Royal Navy. After several distillery closures, the still moved first to Uitvlugt and then to the Diamond Distillery in 1999, where it remains in operation.
The Diamond High Ester marque comes from a rare John Dore Double Retort Pot Still, installed in 1950 and unique to Diamond Distillery in Guyana. This still produces rum with ethyl acetate levels reaching up to 70,000 ppm. The DHE wash ferments for several months with local fruits in a separate area away from the main still house. Slow boiling and high reflux during distillation preserve and enhance its intense aroma profile, resulting in ester levels exceeding 1,500g/hL.
The El Dorado Port Mourant / Diamond High Ester Rum opens with bright aromas of green apple and flambéed banana, layered with clove, cigar, and a touch of peat. On the palate, rich tropical fruit dominates, accented by clove and a spiced tobacco finish that lingers long after the sip.
To sum up, El Dorado Rums, produced at the Diamond Distillery in Guyana, represent over 300 years of Caribbean rum crafting. With a rich history dating back to 1670, El Dorado Rums represent the pinnacle of craftsmanship and tradition in the world of premium aged rums.
