In the world of rum, where legacy and tradition often dominate, Dianne Medrano stands out as a visionary who has reshaped what it means to lead in a historically male-dominated industry. As CEO of Centenario Internacional, the Costa Rican company behind the acclaimed Ron Centenario, Medrano has not only elevated her brand to international recognition across more than 37 countries but also infused it with the soul, authenticity, and environmental consciousness of her homeland.
“Leadership, to me, is not about power—it’s about purpose,” she says. “I believe that when we lead with empathy, intuition, and vision, we can transform not just a company, but an entire culture.”
When Medrano assumed leadership at Centenario Internacional, she faced the challenge of steering a rum brand deeply rooted in tradition toward a new era of innovation and sustainability. In an industry where women in executive roles remain rare, her path demanded courage, clarity, and conviction.
“The biggest challenge was breaking paradigms,” she recalls. “It’s not always expected that a woman leads a rum company—making strategic decisions, driving innovation, and representing a global brand. But I learned that to transform an organization, I first had to transform my own leadership.”
That transformation became the foundation of her leadership philosophy—a blend of discipline, empathy, and authenticity that now defines both her management style and the spirit of Centenario Internacional. Under her guidance, the company has evolved into a beacon of Costa Rican excellence: proud of its roots, bold in its innovation, and deeply committed to sustainability.
A defining moment in Medrano’s journey came when she realized that Ron Centenario didn’t need to compare itself to any other rum in the world. Its strength lay in its authentic Costa Rican identity. From that insight, she began building a storytelling strategy rooted in origin, nature, and national pride—turning Centenario into more than a beverage brand; it became a symbol of craftsmanship and connection.
“A brand with soul can inspire as much as a leader with purpose,” she explains. “Our story isn’t about imitation—it’s about authenticity. When consumers hold a bottle of Ron Centenario, they’re not just buying rum; they’re experiencing a piece of Costa Rica.”
Sustainability isn’t a buzzword for Centenario Internacional—it’s embedded in every process. The company operates a solar farm that powers nearly all its operations, participates actively in the María Aguilar Biological Corridor to protect biodiversity, and promotes circular economy initiatives such as reusing barrel staves for artisanal crafts and composting organic waste from production.
Their commitment has earned Centenario major recognitions, including the Carbon Neutral Certification, the Energy Efficiency Award from the National Power and Light Company, and Costa Rica’s prestigious Bandera Azul Ecológica distinction. Yet for Medrano, the greatest achievement is cultural—embedding sustainability not just in processes but in the mindset of her team.
“True sustainability starts within,” she emphasizes. “When people feel connected to their work and to the environment, they become guardians of something bigger than themselves.”
Under Medrano’s leadership, Centenario Internacional has also become a reference for inclusive corporate culture in Central America. More than 40% of its executive team are women, and the company has implemented leadership and self-development programs that focus on emotional intelligence, communication, and conscious leadership.
One initiative that stands out is a self-defense and confidence program for female employees, designed to strengthen their sense of safety, autonomy, and physical and emotional well-being. Medrano believes that empowerment must be both practical and emotional.
“We can’t build great companies if we ignore the human side of leadership,” she says. “When people feel safe and valued, their creativity flourishes—and that energy is what fuels innovation.”
Looking ahead, Medrano envisions a rum industry that is increasingly conscious, diverse, and experience-driven. She believes consumers are seeking transparency and coherence as much as taste.
“Modern consumers want more than a good product—they want a brand that mirrors their values,” she explains. “The future of rum lies in blending art, responsibility, and emotional connection. It’s about crafting spirits that tell real stories.”
Her leadership philosophy resonates beyond business. Through her podcast Utopías de una CEO, she shares her journey and lessons learned from balancing the roles of executive, mother, and woman in a fast-paced industry. Her voice has become a beacon for leaders who seek to combine ambition with authenticity.
“My purpose is to inspire others to lead their own lives with clarity and love,” she says. “Because when we lead from purpose, everything else aligns—from business results to personal well-being.”
