TRL: What was your biggest challenge when launching your rum brand, and how did you overcome it?
It was never seen as a challenge but as a learning experience. At Grand Marqués, our motto has always been to overcome challenges. Our company was born during the pandemic, when the world was at a standstill, and we were busy making rum. We overcame it with a lot of creativity. The company established itself in the market, and our secret was simply having a high-quality product.
We’ve always aimed higher, and we could prove who we were at that moment. It was a significant challenge, and it’s what defines us today.
TRL: How do you see the evolution of the rum market in the next 5-10 years, and what trends do you think will shape the future of the industry?
I believe the rum market is very promising and expansive. There is room for everyone, as long as things are done right. Of course, time justifies things, and as the old masters say, “You age with the rum, and experience is extremely important.”
However, the reach will depend on the capacity and vision of each brand dedicated to the noble art of making rum. I think the trend will go beyond the conventional, applying new creativity and creating new products, breaking away from traditional formulas and exploring ingredients that have never been seen in the industry before.
TRL: Can you share a personal experience or moment that has significantly influenced the direction of your brand?
Dedication and time invested have been the biggest influence on Grand Marqués’ growth, both nationally and internationally. The brand was born to stay. It was created based on discipline, values, and principles, with an unmatched team that has given Grand Marqués its name today. This brand is built every day with their effort and dedication.
TRL: How do you balance tradition with innovation in your approach to rum production or marketing?
I’ve always said that tradition goes hand in hand with innovation, without forgetting where we come from and our roots. Rum provides an experience that dates back many years, where companies that have dedicated themselves to the industry have been fundamental in the growth and expansion of Venezuelan rum.
TRL: What are some recent initiatives or products you have launched that have had a particular impact?
It’s no secret that Grand Marqués started with spirits; however, we always had a very clear vision towards Premium Rums. Today, we can create exceptional rums with a strong organoleptic profile—focused on taste, aroma, and flavor. This was our focus to stand out in our rums, from aged to ultra-premium, offering a unique experience, starting with the smell and flavor of our liquid.
TRL: How do you educate consumers about your rum, and what is the most important lesson they should learn?
The education we provide is through our Master Rum Maker, Carlos Méndez, with over 35 years of experience, having started at a very young age at Hacienda Santa Teresa, following his father’s legacy, who was also a master rum maker. Today, the DOC certifies Carlos, and through him, along with our marketing efforts, we aim to educate our consumers about the liquid’s origin and the product’s tasting experience. We want them to learn about the aromas and flavors they can perceive in the rums we produce.
TRL: How do you manage quality and consistency as your brand grows and enters new markets?
At Grand Marqués, we pay attention to every detail, from raw materials and packaging to the blend crafted by our Master Rum Maker. A team of professionals brings these rums to life, ensuring that the processes are done correctly, and selecting and filtering raw materials that allow us to create the best rum in Venezuela.
TRL: What is your long-term vision for your rum brand, and how do you see your role in the rum’s evolution industry?
For Grand Marqués, the sky is the limit. We are currently focusing on exports, with the United States being our first step. As I’ve said before, the rum industry is full of opportunities, and our vision is to be present on every continent, spreading the flavor of a powerful rum that carries in every bottle the taste and joy that defines Venezuelans.
Our evolution has been quick and eloquent, leaving us with great satisfaction, because we are aware of our purpose and vision. Grand Marqués knows exactly where it wants to go and where it’s headed.
TRL: What educational advice would you give to rum enthusiasts to better understand the spirit?
Rum is more than just a spirit—it’s a passion. Nowadays, there are very educational programs where people can truly learn about rum, and I’m sure it’s a fascinating career. If someone has the chance to take a diploma course and become a rum sommelier, they should know that it’s a unique experience. The love one develops for rum is unparalleled.
