Tortuga Rum Company has joined forces with the Fair Weather Foundation, a Cayman-based nonprofit, to celebrate and preserve the islands’ rich maritime history. This partnership introduces a special edition ship-shaped bottle of locally distilled rum, with $1 from each sale supporting the restoration of the S.V. Fair Weather—the last known Caymanian-built wooden schooner still afloat Cayman Compass.

Sailing Towards Restoration: The S.V. Fair Weather Project

The Fair Weather Foundation aims to bring the S.V. Fair Weather back to the Cayman Islands, transforming her into a floating classroom to educate future generations about Cayman’s shipbuilding and seafaring traditions. Currently, the schooner is undergoing restoration in Gloucester, UK, with plans to return her home in time for her 75th anniversary in 2025.

A Toast to Tradition: Special Edition Rum Bottles

Tortuga’s special edition ship bottles are available at Tortuga Fine Wine & Spirits and Duty-Free locations across the Cayman Islands. Each purchase not only offers a taste of Cayman’s finest rum but also contributes to preserving the islands’ maritime legacy.

Community Engagement: Tours and Tastings

Visitors are invited to tour Tortuga’s distilleries at 7 Mile Shops and West Bay, which have recently resumed local rum production after a temporary closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Guests can sample freshly crafted rums and purchase the special edition bottles, directly supporting the Fair Weather Foundation’s mission Cayman Compass.

Leadership Perspectives: Voices Behind the Initiative

According to Cayman Compass, Eugene Nolan, CEO of Tortuga Rum Company, expressed pride in supporting the Fair Weather Foundation’s efforts, stating, “This partnership is a meaningful way for us to give back to our community and help keep our seafaring heritage alive.” Paul Deegan, Co-Founder & Director of the Fair Weather Foundation, shared enthusiasm about the collaboration, emphasizing the importance of bringing Cayman’s maritime history to life for future generations.
