Ti’ Punch: Madrid’s New Rum Bar

Located inside the renowned Petit Azca restaurant in the Tetuán neighborhood of Madrid, Spain, steps from the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, there is “Ti’ Punch Rum Bar,” a new rum bar born with the premise of establishing a bar focused on one of the oldest alcoholic beverages in history.

Carlos Carballo, a Spirits Education specialist at the Madrid Chamber of Commerce School and an experienced bartender in Madrid. Fede J. Hernández, owner of The Rum Lab, organizes the most important educational rum events in the USA, Puerto Rico, and now in Spain. Both have partnered to take on this mission.

The Concept

Ti’ Punch is the most popular drink in Martinique and Guadeloupe. It originates from the word Petit Punch. Although there is no official date for its creation, Ti’ Punch has historically been the preferred way to consume agricultural rum in the French Caribbean islands.

The team found two stories that speak to its origin:

  • The drink was created to celebrate the abolition of slavery in France on April 27, 1848.
  • Lafcadio Hearn first wrote about the Ti’ Punch in 1890 in his book “Two Years in the West Indies,” where he describes his trip to Martinique. Since then, the spirit has gained widespread popularity.

The creators envision Ti’ Punch as the ideal place in Madrid for enjoying high-quality cocktails at affordable prices, given their passion for rum, education, and mixology. The main feature cocktail is their Ti’ Punch Traditionnel #1, made with Rhum Clement Bleue.

The Menu

The menu highlights various cocktails, including 4 more variations of Ti’ Punch, 4 variations of Daiquiris, a Jamaican Dark & Stormy with Worthy Park Estate 109, Rum Old Fashion with Ron Barceló Rare Blend Porto Cask Finish, and the Haitian Sour made with Kleren 22 Haitian Rum. Non-rum enthusiasts can choose from alternative cocktail options such as whiskey, gin, tequila, mezcal, and vermouth at the bar.

Mocktails will be added to the menu soon!

The Experience

The Rum Tasting Experience offers a variety of tastings, including rums made in Spain, rums aged in Spain, the Asia Pacific Experience, and the English Influence Style of Rums Tasting.

These experiences cater to groups, teambuilding activities, family events, and educational purposes, offering a versatile experience for different occasions.

Ti’ Punch already has an incredible selection of rums from around the world that can be tasted neat—starting with rums from Martinique, Guadeloupe, and many exotic countries. Currently, we have rums from Barbados, Brazil, Cambodia, the Canary Islands, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, Spain, Venezuela, and other exotic locations.

Petit Azca Restaurant

As a bonus, Petit Azca Restaurant is an authentic Spanish restaurant with delicious food options. Thierry Barbosa, a south of France native who later married Manuela Anchustegui, a Spaniard, founded the restaurant. Both with a financial background decided to open a restaurant in Madrid.
