Three young people are making a delicious impression in the culinary world with their new British Virgin Islands (BVI) rum cake, which is flavored with rum from a historic distillery in Cane Garden Bay, while a wave of BVIslanders continue to make their mark in sports.
The three BVI natives, Chanelle, Alyssa Harrigan, and Kevin Jones, co-founded Nyammin’ in 2019 with the goal of raising awareness of Caribbean culture and food.
Although the three planned to introduce a rum cake in their own nation, they first introduced Nyammin’ in the UK. They teamed up with Callwood Rum Distillery because of its historic history in the BVI.
With a history spanning over two centuries, the Callwood Rum Distillery in Cane Garden Bay, Tortola, is the sole operational rum distillery in the British Virgin Islands.
Co-founder of Nyammin Chanelle Harrigan states, “We are absolutely thrilled to be working with the Callwood Rum Distillery to introduce our new BVI rum cake.” “It’s amazing that we’re able to collaborate with them for our first product launched at home. We wanted to create a product that celebrates BVI heritage and culture and grew up learning about the history of the distillery.”
Arundel’s Original Dark rum, aged for four years, is used in the locally produced Nyammin’ BVI rum cake. As a reference to the BVI’s traditional rum cake recipe, the dried fruit is soaked in the rum to enhance its flavor.
The cake’s creators reveal that the deep, dark color was inspired by the dark, always-present rum cakes that the co-founders of Nyammin ate as children. The cake measures four inches, although a larger version can be ordered.
Kevin Jones, co-founder and chief chef, spent several hours perfecting the recipe over ten baking sessions.
“Since every rum is unique, my goal was to precisely balance each component to accentuate the mouthwatering flavors found in Arundel’s Original Dark rum,” stated Kevin Jones.
The package features a design aimed at showcasing the beauty of the BVI and elements that the co-founders of Nyammin’s cherish about their own nation, incorporating colors from the BVI flag. It consists of:
The Hibiscus blossom, which can be found all over the islands and is a popular earring design, was Chanelle and Alyssa’s childhood favorite.
These rum cakes may be found right now at the Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park, Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport’s Initial Artistry (BVI Apparel House), Callwood Rum Distillery, Swirlzzz, and KennyTees. Nyammin’s objective is to spread over the islands by 2024 and beyond.
Corporate and wholesale orders for the cakes are also accepted.
