Taiwanese rum has gained global recognition after winning two grand gold medals at the 31st Vinalies Internationales, a prestigious wine and spirits competition in France. This year’s event attracted over 2,600 entries from 37 countries, making the achievement even more remarkable.
Produced from pure sugarcane juice, the award-winning Taiwanese rum comes from a collaboration between the Taiwan Sugar Research Institute and National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism (NKUHT). These rums, classified as “Rhum Agricole,” stand out for their quality and craftsmanship. Since 2021, the institute and NKUHT have worked together to develop a local rum that embodies the essence of Taiwan.
The Rich History of Sugarcane in Taiwan
Taiwan’s history with sugarcane dates back 400 years when the Dutch introduced its cultivation to the island. Despite facing price challenges in the global sugar market, Taiwan has successfully leveraged its unique terroir to create premium spirits. This achievement highlights how Taiwanese rum is carving its own niche in the international industry.
Innovation and Dedication in the Spirits Industry
Wu Ming-chang, chairman of Taiwan Sugar Corp. (Taisugar), emphasized the goal of promoting locally produced rum on a global scale. Chen Chien-hao, a professor at NKUHT and a graduate of Université de Bourgogne in France, has been instrumental in reviving Taiwan’s indigenous liquors. His dedication to crafting uniquely Taiwanese rum reflects the spirit of innovation in the country’s beverage industry.
Government Support and Private Sector Growth
The Taiwanese government has played a crucial role in fostering the growth of local distilleries. Over the past 20 years, industry regulations have loosened, allowing the private sector to actively participate in spirit production. With access to international-level brewing techniques, Taiwanese rum has developed into a premium product that competes on the world stage.
The Future of Taiwanese Rum
With its recent success at Vinalies Internationales, Taiwanese rum continues to gain momentum as a world-class spirit. The combination of historical roots, innovative techniques, and government support positions Taiwan as a rising star in the global rum industry. As more consumers discover its unique flavors, Taiwanese rum is set to make an even greater impact worldwide.
