Saint Lucia Distillers, the renowned producer behind Chairman’s Reserve, has secured geographical indication (GI) status for its premium rum portfolio. This milestone highlights the distillery’s dedication to preserving Saint Lucia’s rich rum-making traditions while raising global standards.
Saint Lucia Distillers, established in 1972 in the picturesque Roseau Valley, is the island’s only distillery. It emerged from the merger of Saint Lucia’s last two distilleries and has since built a reputation for crafting exceptional rums.
The GI status now covers signature brands like Admiral Rodney, Chairman’s Reserve, Bounty, and Denros. This recognition affirms the craftsmanship and heritage that define the company’s approach to rum production.
One key ingredient in Saint Lucia Distillers’ success is the pure water sourced from the Roseau River. Naturally high in mineral content, this water undergoes filtration before being used in fermentation. Annually, the distillery collects around 13 million liters of water, which is also used to lower the alcohol content of rum before it enters oak casks for maturation.
Additionally, rainwater with lower mineral content plays an essential role in blending, ensuring the rums achieve their distinct flavor profiles.
Saint Lucia Distillers draws inspiration from the island’s French and British heritage. This cultural fusion is evident in every stage of production, from fermentation and distillation to ageing. By employing both pot and column stills, the distillery creates rums with complex and layered profiles.
The result? A sensory experience featuring tropical fruit aromas of honey, raisins, and bananas, combined with a palate of warm spices and a hint of salinity.
In October 2023, Chairman’s Reserve unveiled a refreshed look, celebrating its Caribbean roots. This redesign reflects the brand’s ongoing commitment to honoring tradition while appealing to modern rum enthusiasts.
Owned by Martinique-based Groupe Bernard Hayot (GBH) since 2016, Saint Lucia Distillers has continued to expand its influence in the global spirits industry. GBH also acquired French liqueur maker Joseph Cartron in 2021 and UK spirits distributor Mangrove Global in 2023, further solidifying its position in the market.
Saint Lucia Distillers’ GI status not only validates its expertise but also showcases the unique qualities of Saint Lucian rum to the world. CEO Margaret Monplaisir emphasizes this achievement as a testament to the island’s vibrant heritage and the distillery’s passion for innovation.
