1. Who is Maite Herrera?

I was born in Nicaragua, designer graduate, digital curious since ever. I have 4 years working for this passionate and exciting industry. I come from a family who always drank Flor de Caña, I didn’t realize that someday I could work for this amazing brand; it’s like a dream come true. I live enjoying long trips more than short ones. If someone asks me “why,” my answer will always be “why not.”

2. Biggest achievement you personally feel you have accomplished for the rum industry.

Spread the word why Flor de Caña is one of the most awarded rum brand and how this brand is working for the environment and their communities.

 

3. What made you fall in love with rum and when did it happen?

When you born in a country which most representative brand is Flor de Caña you know this is part of your roots. When you work for that brand you know you are been part of that legacy! How it could be possible to be Nicaraguan and not to be in love of the rum which is produced 100% by Nicaraguan hands and also is one of the most awarded rum brands in the industry?

 

4. What is that thing that makes you want to continue in the rum industry?

The people and the knowledge you acquire every day.

 

5. Favourite Drink + Recipe

Flor Sparkling:

1 ½ parts of Flor de Caña 12 yr

Splash of premium sparkling water

Orange peel

Simple and delicious!

 

6. Where do you see the rum industry today and in the next 5 years?

I see rum brands working to protect the environment and give back to the community in a big way, and if it’s in less than 5 years much better! I think this is a necessary change not only in rum industry; all the industries must be doing right now. Brands need to invest more in their people and in the environment than ever.

7. What do you think needs to happen to grow the premium category of rum?

I’m going to mention two powerful words: Innovation and disruption.

 

8. Which rum would you recommend a person that:

  • Sipping a premium rum for the 1st time: Flor de Caña 7yr
  • Likes Scotch whisky: Flor de Caña 12yr
  • Likes Bourbon: Flor de Caña 18yr
  • Likes Gin or Vodka: Flor de Caña 7yr Cristalino
  • Likes Cognac: Flor de Caña 25 yr

 

9. Share some (2-3) of your mentors and how they have helped you.

My mom: the noblest heart I’ve ever met.

 

10. What 3-5 things do you have in your bucket list for the next 12 month?

– Learn how to play Marimba (a traditional Nicaraguan instrument)

– Continue traveling and meeting people from around the world
