Creator and promoter of St. Croix Rum Festival, and also the ATL Rum Festival

 

 

1. Who is George Moore

Remembering the values of empathy and service that his father taught him, George took a different direction after high school and took a television production assistant job at WSVI-TV 8; it was a challenge for George but he was very persistent and determined to build a very successful career in the broadcasting business. In 1984, George was given the position of Production Manager for WSVI-TV8. In this position, he was able to build a very strong client base by producing commercials, public service announcements, talk shows, and telethons.

George also used this position to teach young junior and high school students the business of broadcasting. In 1999 George resign from WSVI-TV8, for a new position as Production Manager for TV2, the vision of TV2 is to produced all local programs with Virgin Islands interest from the ground up; as the newest and first broadcast television station in the Virgin Islands that is all digital. After two years at TV2 George moved on to work at the Legislature of the Virgin Islands in the office of Senator Alicia “Chucky” Hansen as the media researcher in preparation for her 2002 gubernatorial campaign; after Senator Alicia “Chucky” Hansen was not successful in her bid for government house, George went back to farming. He started helping his father on the farm by looking after his cows, pigs, small crops and maintaining the property.

After the first few months, George’s father started getting sick and all of the responsibility of the farm fell into hands of George. As the only son, George took charge of the farm. In 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016 George ran for the elected office of the Virgin Islands Legislature, he was not successful in that process. In 2008 the governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands nominated George to the Virgin Islands Public Broadcasting System Board of Directors. George was confirmed by the Legislature of the Virgin Islands. George is presently the Vice-Chairman of the board going on ten (10) years. In 2015 George created and promoted the 1st Annual St. Croix Rum Festival, which is the first in the U.S. Virgin Islands in two hundred and sixty-seven years (267). The rum industry is a very interesting and so attractive to different individuals taste buds. As the years go by, in July of 2017 George decided to start a next rum festival in the State of Atlanta Georgia, naming it ATL Rum Festival, LLC. Once all sponsors are in place and entertainment is set; ATL Rum Festival will take place on Saturday, August 25, 2018.

2. Biggest achievement you personally feel you have accomplish for the rum industry.

3. What made you fall in love with rum and when did it happen?

As a young men growing up in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, there are many rum factories. With my father who is third generation farmer and a labor worker who has cut sugar cane for many years. We use the molasses for the cows to lick during the Summer months; we also have sugar cane planted in our backyard. I just love the smell of molasses and seeing individuals enjoy them self-drinking the different variety of mix rums or cooking and baking with it.

4. What is that thing that makes you want to continue in the rum industry?

The thing that makes me want to continue with the rum industry, is bringing people together from around the world, to experience the love, culture and history of spirits.

5. Favourite Drink + Recipe

What is pretty surprising, am not a drinker; on the other hand I do love the flavor of Blue Chair Bay Banana and Cruzan Coconut Flavor Rum

6. Where do you see the rum industry today and in the next 5 years?

The rum industry is heading in the right direction with the master blenders been more creative with there specialty. In the next 5 years, they need to continue on the same track and to attract more drinkers.

7. What do you think needs to happen to grow the premium category of rum?

In the premium, category, it needs more marketing with a personal testimonial from individuals about there uses of premium rum.

8. Share some (2-3) of your mentors and how they have help you.

9. What 3-5 things do you have in your bucket list for the next 12 month?

What I have in my bucket for the next 12 months is to continue promoting St. Croix rum Festival and ATL Rum Festival. With this festival, I will always make a contribution to schools and nonprofit organizations.

Rum is not just a Spirit, it’s a lifestyle!
