Charlie Aitken, founder and managing director of Rum Cay Rum, has introduced a Scottish-distilled Bahamian rum that pays homage to his family’s life in the Bahamas during the 1970s. Inspired by the island of Rum Cay, where his grandparents once lived, Charlie has transformed a rich family story into a premium spirit that blends Caribbean soul with Scottish craftsmanship.

“Looking through my grandparents’ polaroids and hearing their stories sparked something in me,” Charlie shared. “Our home in Scotland was named Rum Cay, and that connection stayed with me.”

Craft Meets Culture: A Fusion of the Bahamas and Scotland

Charlie partnered with leading drinks industry specialists to create Rum Cay Rum, aiming to blend the vibrant spirit of the Bahamas with Scotland’s renowned distilling expertise. This Scottish distilled Bahamian rum offers a refined flavor profile that remains approachable and versatile—whether sipped neat, mixed, or enjoyed in a cocktail.

“We’ve crafted a sophisticated rum that reflects both cultures,” Charlie explained. “It’s our way of honoring the adventurous energy that shaped my family’s life.”

Reconnecting with the Islands That Sparked It All

Charlie recently traveled to the Bahamas to experience firsthand the places that inspired the rum’s creation. “It was an emotional journey,” he said. “Being there helped me reconnect with the places that shaped so many family memories. This Scottish distilled Bahamian rum is how I want to share that love with others.”

From Personal Passion to Professional Craft

Rum Cay Rum marks Charlie’s debut into the premium spirits market. After completing a course with the Chartered Institute of Brewers and Distillers, he developed the knowledge needed to create this unique blend. Each bottle of Scottish distilled Bahamian rum is a result of hands-on collaboration and innovation.

Elevating the Brand Through Experience

The next chapter for Rum Cay involves introducing the product to bars and restaurants through immersive marketing campaigns. Charlie’s team will focus on placing the Scottish distilled Bahamian rum in venues where consumers appreciate depth of flavor and storytelling behind every bottle.

Creating Buzz With a Pop-Up Experience

To bring the rum directly to customers, Charlie plans to launch an interactive pop-up space. This initiative—supported by the Wilson’s Foundry Studio Programme—will allow people to experience the essence of Rum Cay Rum firsthand.

Based in Glasgow, Wilson’s Foundry supports creative entrepreneurs through a design-focused residency. Their backing has helped shape the concept for this traveling venue that will spotlight Scottish distilled Bahamian rum around the UK.
