Old San Juan welcomes a fresh destination for rum lovers with the opening of Ron Artesano’s first urban location, Casa Artesano, inside the historic Ballajá Barracks. The Jayuya-based distillery officially opened on Monday, February 9, aiming to increase its visibility in the metropolitan market.
José Muñoz González, president and founder of Ron Artesano, explained to WJournal:
“We felt we needed more visibility, especially in the metro area. The opportunity arose to acquire this space in the heart of San Juan, right across from El Morro, the most visited place in Puerto Rico, and we decided it was something worth pursuing.”
Casa Artesano offers the full Ron Artesano product range for on-site sales and hosts events including rum tastings, mixology classes, and private functions. The venue employs 10–12 part-time staff and represents an initial investment of at least $130,000, with an additional $250,000 planned.
Muñoz González emphasized the experience for visitors:
“This space allows us to showcase our product and our experience, not only to tourists but also to locals who might come to San Juan and enjoy the experience.”
The company tested the concept during the San Sebastián Street Festival before the official opening.
“We opened right on time for the festival without announcing it or putting up signs. We literally opened the door to see what would happen, and we had a huge number of people come in, who had a wonderful experience and said many positive things. After the festival, we closed for two to four weeks before formally opening,” Muñoz González said.
Since the official launch, visitor feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. The historic space enhances the brand’s identity and offers a unique setting for patrons.
“People are positively impressed with the quality of our product, the presentation, and the level of the cocktails we offer. Being able to establish our brand in a historic space gives it a beautiful context and a unique experience,” the president shared to WJournal.
In addition to Casa Artesano, the company plans to expand into the U.S. market, starting with Florida, following its inclusion in the Puerto Rico Rum Tax Cover Over program.
“We will sign a contract to begin exporting to Florida, starting with 12 stores. From there, we aim to grow further, possibly exploring opportunities in California,” Muñoz González said.
The company aims to produce at least 10,000 bottles to supply Puerto Rico and the U.S., scaling production based on market opportunities.
“We want to be very creative in how we make rums. Each batch is unique, with character and a distinctive taste unlike any other on the market,” he concluded.
Casa Artesano establishes Ron Artesano not only as a rum producer but also as a cultural and experiential destination, blending historic charm with a modern approach to craft spirits.
