TRL: What does rum mean to you? What made you fall in love with rum and when did it happen?
For me, rum represents an opportunity to connect the history, culture, and spirit of where it’s distilled. My love for rum began when I first discovered the complexities behind its production, and I quickly became fascinated by its versatility and limitless possibilities for incorporating the exotic flavors and essences of Hawaii.
Once joining Kōloa Rum, we immediately began assembling our amazingly talented team who quickly applied their knowledge and expertise to create and produce world-class rum products. Each bottle of Kōloa Rum is uniquely Hawaiian, crafted using many locally sourced ingredients that contribute to the unique flavor profiles and helps to support our local community. It’s about creating products that reflect the essence of our islands and contribute to the livelihoods of our neighbors.
TRL: Three essential characteristics that define the rum according to your perspective.
I believe that flavor complexity, craftsmanship and cultural heritage tied to the bottle are the three main characteristics of a true premium rum.
TRL: What is the most important contribution you have made in the rum industry?
My most significant contribution has been leading Kōloa Rum Company to become an internationally recognized brand while staying true to our roots in Kaua’i. We’ve embraced sustainable practices and helped raise the profile of Hawaiian rum on the global stage, all while supporting our local economy and community.
TRL: Benefits that the rum industry has given you.
The rum industry has given me the opportunity to connect with people from diverse backgrounds, learn about different cultures, and share the spirit of Aloha with the world, which allows me to be part of a passionate community that values quality, tradition, and innovation.
Through rum, I’ve learned how deeply a spirit can reflect the place it’s from, from the ingredients, to distillation, and blending. Sharing Kōloa Rum’s story has been a deeply rewarding experience that allows me to embrace and manifest the spirit of Aloha and Hawaii’s rich culture wherever I go.
TRL: What’s another thing you are passionate about, in addition to rum? Why?
I’m passionate about giving back to our local community by supporting individuals and organizations that provide critical services and resources that might otherwise be unavailable.
TRL: What is your favorite place for drinking rum?
My favorite place to enjoy rum is on the beautiful beaches of Kaua’i. There’s something truly special about unwinding with a glass of rum, listening to the sound of the ocean waves, and feeling the warmth of the Hawaiian sun. Nothing beats the beauty and serenity of our island home.
I also enjoy visiting the Kōloa Rum Tasting Room, which is a fantastic place to connect with both new and existing Kōloa Rum enthusiasts. Our staff and rum tenders offer a unique experience to explore our different rums, learn about their production, and share stories with fellow lovers of this amazing spirit.
TRL: Favorite drink + Recipe
My favorite drink is Kōloa Espresso Martini, a smooth and velvety cocktail made with our Coffee Rum and Cacao Rum. Here’s the recipe and image:
● 1 oz. Kōloa Kaua’i Coffee Rum
● ½ oz. Kōloa Kaua’i Cacao Rum
● ½ oz. Big Island Cinnamon Syrup
● 2 oz. Cold Brew
● Garnish: Kaua’i Coffee Espresso Bean
– Instructions: Add all ingredients in a shaker with ice. Shake until chilled, strain and serve in a chilled glass.
TRL: Why is it important to educate the rum consumer?
Educating the rum consumer is crucial because it helps people recognize and appreciate the versatility and craftsmanship behind the spirit. While tequila has gained considerable recognition, a deeper knowledge and understanding of rum with consumers has yet to be achieved. According to a report from the Distilled Spirits Council, rum constitutes about 22.7% of the spirits market, but the average consumer’s knowledge base remains relatively low. This presents a unique opportunity to educate them about the different styles, production methods, and flavor profiles of rum, and broaden their understanding in developing a deeper appreciation for this amazing spirit. This not only enhances their enjoyment but also supports the entire industry by promoting quality over quantity.
TRL: Any tips to train the palate and taste a good premium rum?
To train your palate, start by tasting different types of rum. Begin by nosing the rum to pick up its aromas and try to identify specific notes. Then take small sips, let it sit on your tongue, and focus on the different flavors that emerge. Tasting premium rum is about savoring the subtleties, so it helps to taste alongside someone experienced or attend a guided tasting session to learn more about what to look for.
TRL: How can the rum contribute to improving the crisis in some countries?
The rum industry can play a role in improving economic stability by creating jobs, supporting local agriculture, and fostering tourism. In many rum-producing countries, the industry is a significant part of the economy, providing livelihoods to farmers, distillers, and hospitality workers. By investing in sustainable practices and local communities, the rum industry can help build stronger economies.
TRL: Is the commitment to sustainable development the key to success for the permanence of the rum industry in the world? Why?
Absolutely. Sustainability is a necessity for the long-term viability of any industry, and it is especially important for those of us who live and work in a pristine island environment such as Hawaii. By committing to sustainable practices, we ensure that we are preserving the natural resources we depend on, like sugarcane, water, and energy. It helps to build the industry and become more resilient. Also, consumers are increasingly conscious of environmental and social issues and tend to support brands who share the same environmental concerns. With a commitment to sustainability, we can build trust and loyalty among them.
TRL: Who would like to meet in the rum industry? What would you say to him/her?
Actually, I would like to spend some quality time with the Bacardi family and learn more about the brand’s history and its remarkable evolution over the years. I have great respect and admiration for those who persevere, survive, and ultimately succeed against seemingly insurmountable challenges.
TRL: What are your next goals in the rum industry?
My goal is to continue expanding Kōloa Rum’s presence domestically and globally while staying true to our roots and values. I want to introduce more people to the authentic flavors of Hawaiian rum and continue to innovate with new products that reflect the spirit and culture of Kaua’i.
TRL: Plans you have when you leave the rum industry.
I can’t imagine leaving the rum industry entirely. When the time is right, I see myself transitioning to a consulting or advisory role allowing me to share the knowledge, experience, and perspective that I have gained with others who are beginning their journey in the industry.
TRL: Why is the role of the bartender important in the rum industry?
Bartenders are storytellers and ambassadors for spirits. They are integral to introducing consumers to new rums, educating them on flavor profiles, and creating experiences that elevate the spirit. A skilled bartender can craft cocktails that highlight its unique qualities and help consumers develop an appreciation for premium rums. Their influence and creativity are crucial for expanding the popularity and understanding of rum.
TRL: What is your advice for new generations in the rum industry?
Stay curious and keep learning. The rum industry is rich with history and tradition but there is always room for innovation. Don’t be reluctant or afraid to experiment while staying true to the essence of the spirit.
