Maison Ferrand’s Planteray Rum has introduced a new twist to its popular 20th Anniversary XO rum by finishing it in Pedro Ximénez (PX) Sherry casks. This latest edition builds on the original XO rum launched in 2009 to celebrate Alexandre Gabriel’s 20 years as master blender of Maison Ferrand.
Planteray’s XO 20th Anniversary rum is known for its distinctive aging process, which involves multiple casks and settings. For the new PXXO edition, the Barbados rum undergoes an additional aging phase in PX Sherry casks. This method reflects a centuries-old tradition of blending flavors from different geographic regions during long sea voyages.
The rum starts its aging journey in American oak casks under the tropical conditions of Barbados at the West Indies Rum Distillery. It then moves to France, where it continues to mature in ex-Ferrand Cognac casks, benefiting from the cooler climate. The final maturation in PX casks adds a rich layer of complexity to the rum.
The PX casks bring distinct flavors of nutty dried fruits and plums, enhancing the rum’s profile with a “nuanced depth.” This finishing touch honors both Planteray’s commitment to innovation and its respect for tradition.
Alexandre Gabriel explained the reasoning behind the PX finish: “We wanted to elevate our 20th Anniversary edition with Pedro Ximénez casks, a time-honored technique that enriches the rum with unique, complementary flavors. This rum is loved around the world.”
While many rums today are aged solely in Bourbon barrels, Gabriel emphasized Planteray’s dedication to exploring diverse aging techniques. “Using Pedro Ximénez barrels shows our commitment to providing a premium drinking experience,” he said. This focus on craftsmanship sets Planteray apart, offering rum enthusiasts something truly special.
According to The Spirit Business, Planteray PXXO 20th Anniversary Rum, bottled at 40% ABV, is available globally for €70 (US$78/£58). The rum reflects the brand’s continuous evolution, following the rebranding from Plantation Rum to Planteray earlier this year.
In addition to the new release, Maison Ferrand is expanding its market presence. In July, the company acquired UK distributor Identity Drinks, positioning Planteray for further growth in the global spirits market.
