Nusa Caña, a rum brand inspired by the rich rum-making traditions of Bali, officially launched in the Australian market after establishing a strong presence in over 20 global markets. Founded in 2016 by Australian entrepreneur Marc Rodrigues, the brand celebrates Indonesia’s unique contribution to the world of spirits.

“Batavia Arrack, or Indonesian rum, was the most popular, exotic, and sought-after sugarcane spirit from the 17th to the 19th century,” explains Rodrigues. This style of rum earned its reputation as the world’s first luxury spirit, often referred to as the “Godfather of the rum world.”

Rodrigues drew inspiration from the island’s heritage to craft Nusa Caña, a spiced rum that incorporates traditional Indonesian flavors like nutmeg, clove, ginger, chocolate, pineapple, and coffee. This distinctive blend pays homage to the island’s legacy while offering a modern twist for today’s rum enthusiasts.

The Art of Indonesian Rum

Rum production in Indonesia dates back to the 17th century, with methods that set it apart from other regions. Producers ferment molasses from Javanese sugarcane with red rice before distilling the spirit in Chinese-style copper pot stills. They age the rum in Indonesian teak barrels, imparting unique flavors that set Batavia Arrack apart from traditional Caribbean rums.

Rodrigues saw the potential to revive this heritage, building on Indonesia’s reputation as the origin of the world’s first globally traded luxury spirit. “I knew I had to bring this history back to life,” he says, reflecting on his journey with Nusa Caña.

A Growing Global Presence

Since its launch, Nusa Caña has become Indonesia’s top cocktail rum and the best-selling spirit at Bali Airport, where travelers purchase over 200 bottles daily. Beyond Indonesia, the brand has gained traction in Greece and expanded across Europe and the United States.

In Australia, Nusa Caña Spiced Rum is now available at Liquorland and First Choice Liquor stores nationwide for $59 per bottle. With its smooth 40% ABV and vibrant flavor profile, the rum offers a versatile base for cocktails or sipping neat.

Building Credibility Through Collaboration

Rodrigues credits the brand’s success in Indonesia to values of humility and collaboration. “Time builds credibility and respect,” he notes. “The longer I’ve adhered to these principles, the more respect I’ve earned, which has been essential in getting things done.”

This focus on community and cultural respect has allowed Nusa Caña to thrive in its country of origin while resonating with global audiences.
