New Eclipse Navy Strength Rum from Mount Gay

Mount Gay Rum’s latest offering, Eclipse Navy Strength rum, showcases its deep ties to its seafaring heritage and local community.

The new limited edition rum is being released in time for Cowes Week, which is a sailing regatta week that takes place in Cowes, England, from July 27 to August 2, and it features a maritime heritage for rum that dates back to the 18th century.

Mount Gay claims that the origin of the name “Navy Strength” dates back to a period in which sailors would travel with extremely flammable rum barrels that could be used to light gunpowder in the event of a fight because damp gunpowder would not light and would be useless.

This was tested by mixing gunpowder with a spirit and seeing if it ignited. If it did, it was said to be 100 percent proof using the US Navy Strength, which is 57.1% ABV.

Compared to Mount Gay’s classic Eclipse release, the new Eclipse Navy Strength rum contains a higher percentage of older pot still rums in its mix, matures for two to four years, and pays homage to its naval heritage. It has an ABV of 57.1%.

According to Mount Gay, this contributes to the drink’s roundness and balance while also providing a strong and lively flavor profile with flavors of roasted pineapple, banana, mocha, and vanilla.

At £35 ($32.99 approximately in the US) a bottle, the new Mount Gay Eclipse Navy Strength rum is currently sold in the off-trade.

Since Eclipse was introduced in 1910, sailors all over the world have adored it, thus it seemed reasonable to test the well-liked combination at navy strength.
