Mossburn Distillers, under the ownership of Marussia Beverages, has introduced the inaugural release of its highly anticipated limited edition series. This first release showcases a 12-year-old Speyside blended malt, which undergoes a unique aging process, and promises to be a treat for both whisky and rum enthusiasts.
The 12-year-old Speyside blended malt begins its journey in ex-Bourbon casks, where it matures gracefully before embarking on a distinctive finishing phase. What sets this release apart is the use of rum casks from the renowned Foursquare Rum Distillery in Barbados for the final aging process.
This collaboration with Foursquare Distillery and the infusion of Barbados’ rum casks add an intriguing and unique dimension to the Scotch. Richard Seale, CEO and master distiller of Foursquare Distillery, expressed his excitement about this collaboration, stating, “When Neil asked if we could collaborate on aging his whisky in Foursquare casks, I was immediately keen to be involved. It’s intriguing to see the character our rum casks will impart on the blend and it’s an excellent opportunity to engage whisky drinkers to bring them into the world of rum.”
The result of this partnership is a whisky with enticing flavors. The nose reveals peppermint and nutmeg, while the palate delights with notes of toffee apple and gingerbread. The experience culminates with a long, sweet, and spicy finish, making it a truly distinctive offering.
To emphasize the shared heritage of both brands, the packaging features flags from both nations and illustrations of palm trees.
Mossburn’s Neil Macleod Mathieson emphasized the delicacy of matching casks to whisky, aiming to enhance the character of the chosen whiskies and introduce nuances from the spirits that previously occupied the casks. Mathieson stated, “These Barbados casks complement rather than fight with our Speyside malt whisky blend and together they create a whisky both rum and whisky lovers will surely enjoy.”
This exclusive Mossburn Speyside Blended Malt Scotch is bottled at a bold 57.7% ABV and retails for £65 (approximately US$80). However, this release is extremely limited, with only 10,000 bottles available worldwide, of which 1,500 are allocated for the UK market.
Mossburn, known for its commitment to crafting exceptional spirits, expanded its portfolio by opening its first single malt distillery, Torabhaig, on the picturesque Isle of Skye in 2017. This recent collaboration represents yet another chapter in Mossburn’s journey to explore and push the boundaries of whisky craftsmanship.
As the first installment in the Cask Collaboration series, Mossburn’s new release promises to entice connoisseurs with a harmonious fusion of Scotch and rum influences. Whisky enthusiasts, as well as those with a passion for premium rums, will undoubtedly find this release a delightful addition to their collections.
