Legacy in Motion: Delphine Gardère and the Future of Rhum Barbancourt

Delphine Gardère, CEO of Rhum Barbancourt and the fifth generation to lead the historic house founded in 1862 by Dupré Barbancourt, represents the continuity of one of Haiti’s most emblematic brands. Her leadership blends deep respect for a legacy spanning more than 160 years with a contemporary vision to strengthen and project the brand to new generations and markets.

For Gardère, leading Barbancourt is both a privilege and a responsibility: safeguarding a tradition that has shaped the identity of Haitian rum while driving the innovation needed for its future. Beyond her executive role, she is also the mother of two girls — a facet that influences her leadership style and her commitment to building something meaningful, resilient, and sustainable. Her approach reflects a clear mission: to honor the past, fortify the present, and ensure that Barbancourt remains a symbol of excellence for generations to come.

TRL: What was the biggest challenge you faced in leading the brand, and how did you overcome it?

Leading a business in Haiti also requires a great deal of resilience. The environment has been volatile and navigating this reality while maintaining long-term vision and stability for the company is part of the responsibility of leadership.

In addition, the business world in Haiti is still largely male-dominated. As a woman leading a historic company, I’ve sometimes had to work harder to prove myself and to earn the same level of credibility. But I also see it as an opportunity to lead by example and to show that leadership can take many forms.

I’ve overcome these challenges by staying grounded in my values and in the values that have guided the company for generations, while also surrounding myself with a strong network of supportive people. I’m fortunate to have an incredible husband who is my biggest cheerleader, and to work alongside an extraordinary team. Together, we remain focused on strengthening the brand, investing in the future, and continuing to represent Haiti with pride on the global stage.

TRL: How do you see the rum market evolving in the next 5–10 years?

The rum industry is going through a very interesting moment, and it’s fascinating to see how consumer perceptions of rum are evolving. We’re beginning to see rum earn the same level of respect that whisky and cognac have enjoyed for many years.

I believe the future of rum will be shaped by authenticity and transparency, which are at the heart of true premiumization. Today’s consumers want to understand the story behind the bottle: the agriculture, the craftsmanship, and the culture that define each rum.

For producers like us, that means continuing to honor tradition while clearly sharing the heritage, the process, and the people behind what we create.

TRL: How do you balance tradition with innovation?

At Barbancourt, our heritage and legacy are the foundations of our identity. For more than 160 years, we have upheld an unwavering commitment to craftsmanship and authenticity. These are not just elements of our past; they are the principles that continue to guide every decision we make today. Our production methods, our standards, and our values are integral to who we are, and they must be preserved.

At the same time, we recognize that to remain relevant, we must evolve. Innovation allows us to better engage with both existing and new consumers, while continuing to share a side of Haiti that remains largely underrepresented on the global stage. This evolution is reflected in the refinement of our classic packaging, in the way we communicate our story, in the development of our portfolio, and in the introduction of limited editions that enable us to reach new audiences and explore new markets.

TRL: What are some recent initiatives or developments that have been impactful?

One initiative that is especially meaningful to us is the work of Fondation Barbancourt. Through the foundation, we are committed to supporting education, fostering community development, and advancing social initiatives across Haiti.

As a company rooted in Haiti for more than 160 years, we believe our role extends beyond producing exceptional rum. Our responsibility is also to contribute in a tangible way to the country’s future. The success of Barbancourt must go hand in hand with the progress and wellbeing of the communities that have sustained us for generations.

TRL: How do you educate consumers about your rum?

Education starts with storytelling. When people understand the craftsmanship behind the rum, they begin to appreciate the spirit in a completely different way.

At Barbancourt, this story is deeply connected to Haiti. Our rum is not just a product; it reflects the land, a heritage of over 160 years old, and the people who have dedicated generations to this craft. Behind every bottle are the farmers who grow the cane, the distillers who carry forward traditional techniques, and the teams who care for the rum.

When people connect with that story, with the culture, the craftsmanship, and the history, they begin to see rum differently. They discover a spirit that carries identity, resilience, and heritage. That’s why we encourage people to explore rum thoughtfully and to appreciate the richness and diversity of the category.

TRL: How do you maintain quality and consistency as the brand grows?

Our production methods, from the selection of sugarcane to distillation and aging, remain unchanged because they are at the heart of who we are. For us, growth has never meant moving faster at the expense of quality; it means growing with the same consistency and discipline that have defined Barbancourt for more than 160 years. It also means investing in our people, because they are the true guardians of our savoir-faire.

Consistency is rooted in the transmission of our “savoir-faire” and a strong sense of collective responsibility. There is genuine pride within our teams to ensure that every bottle reflects the standards we stand for. Their dedication and care are essential to preserving the integrity of our brand.

We approach growth thoughtfully and deliberately, always prioritizing long-term brand integrity over short-term gains. Every decision is guided by a simple question: does this align with and strengthen who we are?

Ultimately, growth only matters if it builds trust. Maintaining quality and consistency is how we honor that trust with our consumers, every day.
