LITCHQUOR LTD is a dynamic Mauritian company that specializes in the development of premium spirits. All products are produced in small batches with distillates from sugar cane harvested on the fertile volcanic grounds around the island of Mauritius.
Not attached to any of the distilleries, the company independently uses the best Rums from all around the island and creates outstanding products that represent the entirety of Mauritius and its many facets. Frederic Bestel is the CEO of Litchquor Ltd. Learn more about him in this interview:
TRL: Who is Frederic Bestel?
Born and bred in Mauritius. The family, originally from Sedan in France, arrived in Mauritius in 1780. 20 years of passion in the rum industry. Started as a trader, then worked for a distillery, and in 2010 created my blends and brands.
TRL: What does the rum mean to you?
In Mauritius, “rum” had a bad connotation, but in the past 15 years, with efforts from all distilleries, “rums” have developed into premium spirits.
TRL: What made you fall in love with rum and when did it happen?
I had the opportunity to travel around the world when I was working as a buyer and for the distillery. I understood the evolution of rum was happening and realized that Mauritius had some chances. I wanted to be part of that transition.
TRL: Three essential characteristics that define the rum according to your perspective.
My priority, serve the consumer’s needs. I am not a fan of telling the consumer what is good or not good. He/she is the decision maker, not me.
TRL: What is the most important contribution you have made to the rum industry?
I hope I have been able to tell my Mauritian colleagues that we can achieve a “Mauritian Rum Identity” by ourselves. I will continue in this direction.
TRL: Benefits that the rum industry has given you.
I have met amazing people around the globe who share the same passion. I have traveled the world and still many countries to discover.
TRL: What’s another thing you are passionate about besides rum?
Rum made me discover cigars. I am still learning about cigars and it’s similar to what I do with rums and blending.
TRL: What is your favorite place for drinking rum?
Certainly with friends. Anywhere around the world, but sharing with friends.
TRL: Favorite drink + Recipe
The “Old Fashioned” cocktail.
TRL: Why is it important to educate the rum consumer?
Education is about sharing information to better understand a product we enjoy.
TRL: Any tips to train the palate and taste a good premium rum?
Once a sommelier told me, “The best wine in the world is the wine you enjoy”. This has changed my life. Forget the price, the packaging, and all the marketing stories any rum may have. If you enjoy it, it’s the priority.
TRL: How can the rum contribute to improving the crisis in some countries?
Like any product, being proud of what a country produces. Hard work from our land and people and creating our own identity. We must not copy what others do. We need to be creative.
TRL: Is the commitment to sustainable development the key to success for the permanence of the rum industry in the world?
Not the key, but important, like in all other industries. Why? Because it is simply part of any sustainable development.
TRL: Who would like to meet in the rum industry?
People who love rums and who speak well about rums. I dislike those who criticize the work of others and think only their work is good.
TRL: What are your next goals in the rum industry?
I have many projects. I aim to contribute to the “Mauritian Rum Identity”.
TRL: Plans you have when you leave the rum industry.
Rest in peace.
TRL: Why is the role of the bartender important in the rum industry?
They are in direct contact with consumers.
TRL: What is your advice for new generations in the rum industry?
Be passionate about what you do. Be creative and certainly do not listen to the critics.
TRL: How can people learn more about you?
