Export Marketing Manager – Varela Hermanos (Ron Abuelo): LARISSA ARJONA
TRL: Who is Larissa Arjona?
My name is Larissa Arjona, I am Panamanian with Spanish nationality. I have lived in Spain for over 15 years. I am a lawyer with a Master’s Degree in law, and for the last few years, I have been in charge of the communication of the Ron Abuelo brand in international markets.
Besides being a proactive individual in the rum industry, I am dedicated to empower women in this industry, to carry the voice of all those women who have the desire of working in an environment of equal opportunities, and to do it together as a team makes me very happy.
TRL: What does the rum mean to you? What made you fall in love with rum and when did it happen?
For me, rum is part of my daily life. It’s my job, it’s my passion. My professional life revolves around rum. On a personal level, rum has given me many positive things: an invaluable network of professional contacts and a circle of incredible rum lovers for life.
I fell in love with rum in Panama as it is a huge part of the Panamanian culture and has always been present during professional and personal important events of life. Thanks to my grandfather, I fell in love with rum and his land in Pesé, Panama – the heart and origin of Ron Abuelo.
TRL: What is the most important contribution you have made to the rum industry?
It’s coming! Women Leading Rum has chosen me as Executive President. I am honored and committed to bringing the “voice” of all the women of the association to the world. I am confident that together in sisterhood, we will foster a rum industry that is more inclusive, diverse, and equitable for all women.
TRL: What’s another thing you are passionate about, besides rum? Why?
It’s very simple! I have a passion for living life to the fullest, for living it well, for living it intensely with my family and friends. I enjoy traveling, long conversations, laughing out loud, and listening to my friends. It is something I live with a lot of passion. I love psychology. I can spend hours listening to a friend and giving them the best advice by putting myself in their shoes.
TRL: What is your favorite place for drinking rum?
In Panama, absolutely. Having a glass of rum & coke, cocktail or just a good premium rum on the rocks in Panama City or on an island in San Blas or Bocas del Toro. That’s all my body needs!
TRL: Favorite drink + Recipe
Rum and pleasant conversation.
TRL: How can the rum contribute to improving the crisis in some countries?
The rum industry has the potential to positively impact crisis-stricken countries through various avenues. By creating job opportunities, supporting local agriculture, and generating export revenue, the industry can contribute to economic development.
Engaging in corporate social responsibility initiatives, promoting environmental sustainability, and fostering community development are crucial for building a positive and lasting impact. Overall, aligning with responsible and ethical practices is essential for maximizing the positive influence of the rum industry in crisis-affected regions.

I want to meet all the influential women in the rum industry, learn about them, hear their stories and experiences, and push their ideas through the Women Leading Rum platform.
TRL: Plans you have when you leave the rum industry.
Never give up something that you love and makes you happy. I have no plans to leave the rum industry.
