The Beverage Testing Institute (BevTest) has released its much-anticipated Top 10 Rums of 2024, showcasing the versatility and innovation of modern rum. This year’s lineup features producers ranging from heritage brands to trailblazing craft distillers. Leading the list is Hampden Estate HLCF Classic Single Jamaican Rum, earning the coveted title of Rum of the Year for its remarkable craftsmanship and distinctive flavor.
In a recent article on Forbes.com, Jerald O’Kennard, President of the Chicago-based Beverage Testing Institute, shared insights into the evolving rum landscape. “The rum category is often seen as the wild west of spirits,” he said. Unlike other spirits categories that follow strict regulations—like Cognac’s XO or Bourbon’s Straight designation—rum relies on national and regional traditions without universal quality standards.
O’Kennard added, “This lack of regulation can confuse consumers and lead to questionable marketing practices. However, we’re seeing more producers embrace transparency and high standards, which is refreshing.”
The BevTest Top 10 Rums list highlights producers who prioritize authenticity, intentionality, and education. For instance:
Topping the list is Hampden Estate HLCF, a high-ester Jamaican rum celebrated for its bold flavors. The judging panel described it as “aromatic with overripe pineapple, banana dipped in caramel, and warming spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. Its complexity and intensity make it perfect for sipping or pairing with cigars.”
With aromas of hazelnut and butterscotch, this rum delivers flavors of sea salt caramel, peach, and orange, blending barrel influence with cane sweetness.
A classic British Navy Rum with notes of chocolate crème brûlée, grilled pineapple, and baked cherries, offering robust complexity and navy strength.
A lightly aged rum with flavors of caramel, apple pie, and vanilla, perfect for sipping or pairing with cigars.
The list also highlights the variety within rum, from unaged white rums to rich, aged options:
The Top 10 Rums of 2024 range from affordable gems under $30 to premium bottles over $100, catering to a wide audience. These rums showcase the diverse flavor profiles of Jamaican, Haitian, Central American, and Agricole-style rums.
Whether you prefer neat rum or mixed into a cocktail, this list provides a must-try selection for every rum enthusiast.
