On Saturday, February 24, “El CatarRon” was held. The event organized by Alejandra González, Juan Cristóbal Najul, Isabella Antillano and Ana Elena Guinand, a group of students from Monteávila University, is part of an initiative to transmit, create and promote appreciation for the Rum of Venezuela, which stands as an element that leaves the name of the country outside its borders. The event was held at Hacienda La Vega in Caracas.

The main focus of “El CatarRon“, as an event, was a directed tasting and, at the same time, the creation of an atmosphere that culturized and transmitted interest about the venezuelan rum, its excellent properties and its impact at a national and international level. The event counted with the participation of a prestigious brand of venezuelan rum as it is RON SANTA TERESA, a talk by journalist specialized in gastronomy ROSANNA DI TURI and a tasting led by master blender NÉSTOR ORTEGA. During the event, the organizers made a toast for the success of the project and offered live music by the emerging band Anakena, which delighted everyone with acoustic covers from important Venezuelan artists and songs of their own authorship.

The organizers justify the realization of this event because of the lack of interest in a product that represents an important part of venezuelan culture. All this is being encouraged through their Instagram (@elcatarron), where they published information of interest, data, recommendations and a tour through history of rum in Venezuela. All of this with the intention of generating relevant content for a broad target of venezuelans of legal age, the account already has about 1500 followers.

The name of the project is a word play between “tasting” and “rum” in spanish. They also created the concept of “catarrón “, who is someone dedicated to rum tasting. The organizers have in mind to deliver more events like this throughout the year, to keep incentivizing the brand “Venezuela” through a gastronomic element as important as rum.
