Down Island Spirits introduces two new additions to their highly desired collection of single cask rums. These latest expressions, coming from from Brazil and Martinique, bring a diverse range of attractive aromas and flavors.

Mike Streeter, founder and owner of Down Island Spirits, expressed his delight regarding the positive reception of their initial four rums last year. “As a brand, our objective is to enhance the availability of top-quality cane spirits in the US. We firmly believe that our new casks from Martinique and Brazil will play a significant role in achieving this goal. These exceptionally flavorful rums are crafted by renowned distilleries with a long-standing history of excellence.”

Down Island Spirits introduce two new additions

After undergoing column distillation in Sainte-Marie, a rural community on the French-Caribbean island, Down Island’s Martinique rum undergoes a six-year aging process in once-used Bourbon casks. Following this, it is bottled in Florida, guaranteeing the absence of additives, coloring, or filtration. This expression, with a cask strength of 58% ABV, remains true to the Down Island Spirits collection’s hallmark.

The Martinique 2017 rum entices with refreshing aromas of ripe apples, black pepper, and musty brine. Subtle earthy notes and oak undertones follow suit. On the palate, a delightful interplay of cinnamon, black pepper, grass, vanilla, and lemongrass dances, leading to a finish characterized by allspice, tea, and tobacco.

Down Island’s Brazil rum, distilled at Epris Distillery in Sao Roque, is an excellent blend of 80% cane juice and 20% treacle rum. It undergoes dual aging: six years in Amburana wood barrels and an additional six years in American Oak. Down Island Spirits bottles it at 55.1% ABV, without additives, coloring, or filtration, matching its counterpart.

Brazil 2011 rum captivates with floral and tropical fruit aromas, complemented by hints of black pepper, spice, and brown sugar. The Amburana wood adds spicy notes that blend perfectly with flavors of pineapple, syrup, and burnt ginger on the palate. The finish leaves a pleasant touch of Amburana spice, cloves, and a subtle hint of anise.

With their exceptional quality and unique origins, DIS’s new expressions have captured the attention and acclaim of rum enthusiasts and patrons. Streeter expressed his gratitude, stating, “Since the early days of our brand, we are grateful for the loyal following we have developed. “With confidence, he stated, “Our Brazil and Martinique rums will exceed our esteemed customers’ high expectations. The initial feedback we have received has been nothing short of extraordinary.”

Down Island Spirits distributes in Florida and Massachusetts, expanding to New York, Texas, and California in late 2023/24. Customers can easily place online retail orders and enjoy sending to over 40 states by visiting downislandspirits.com.
