Diageo Bacardi Shake-Up: Former Diageo MD Joins Bacardi as Global Senior VP

Pedro Mendonça, a long-time Diageo executive, is stepping into a new role at Bacardi as the global senior VP for Bacardi & rums. His appointment follows a six-month career break after leaving his position as managing director of Diageo’s Global Reserve in August.

With nearly two decades at Diageo, Mendonça brings extensive experience in the rum industry. He previously served as CEO of Zacapa, the Guatemalan rum brand, for almost three years. Additionally, he played a key role in acquiring Don Papa rum during his time with Global Reserve.

Leadership Changes at Bacardi

Mendonça’s move comes as Bacardi restructures its leadership team. His appointment fills the vacancy left by Roberto Ramirez Laverde, who is transitioning to global senior VP for Patrón & Agaves. In this role, Laverde will oversee Patrón tequila, Cazadores, and Ilegal mezcal.

Laverde’s history with Bacardi dates back to 2012 when he joined from Heineken in Mexico. After a brief stint at Mastercard, he returned to Bacardi in late 2023 to lead its global rum operations.

Both executives will now report directly to Bacardi’s CMO, Ned Duggan, who has been in the role since September 2022.

Diageo’s Recent Rum Strategy

Meanwhile, Diageo has been reshaping its presence in the rum market. After acquiring Don Papa rum, the company made strategic shifts, including selling the Pampero brand in July and divesting from Cacique two weeks later.

With Mendonça’s extensive background in premium rums, Bacardi is positioning itself for growth in the category, while Diageo continues refining its global spirits portfolio.
