David Jaudhuin: “Meridian Rhum is my adventure turned brand”

From northern France to the heart of Bellegarde, David Jaudhuin has followed a path defined by curiosity and a constant search for new challenges. His journey into the rum world began as an ambassador for a premium brand, an experience that sparked a genuine passion for this universe of aromas, tradition, and culture. In 2024, he took a bold step forward by founding Meridian Rhum, a vibrant project that pays tribute to the terroir of Marie-Galante in Guadeloupe, reflecting his commitment to quality, authenticity, and craftsmanship. In this interview, Jaudhuin shares how he turned his vision into reality and what it means to him to carry the spirit of rum into new frontiers.

TRL: What was the biggest challenge you faced in launching your rum brand, and how did you overcome it?

Coming from outside the production side of the industry, my biggest challenge was building the right network and structure to create a truly high-end product. It required time, persistence, and a lot of learning. Fortunately, through a growing network of trusted contacts, frequent trips to Guadeloupe, and numerous visits to sugarcane producers, I was able to gain the knowledge, relationships, and resources needed to establish a smooth and efficient operation.

Over the next 5–10 years, the rum market is expected to continue its shift toward premiumization, as consumers increasingly seek high-quality, authentic products with a strong sense of origin. Sustainability, transparency in sourcing, and limited-edition releases will play a growing role. Meridian Rhum is positioned to thrive in this environment by offering terroir-driven rums from Marie-Galante and carefully curated selections from around the world, meeting the demand for craftsmanship, authenticity, and exploration beyond traditional rum markets.

TRL: Can you share a personal experience or moment that significantly influenced your brand’s direction?

One of the most defining moments for Meridian Rhum came right at the start of our journey. Committed to quality and craftsmanship, I made the decision to bottle our rums in mainland France, blending them with the pure, mineral-rich water from the volcanoes of Auvergne. The result was even more remarkable than I had imagined. Just months after our launch, one of our rums was awarded a gold medal in Lyon and a silver medal in London. That early recognition not only validated our approach but also set the tone for the brand’s direction — a relentless pursuit of authenticity, excellence, and the kind of details that transform good rum into something unforgettable.

TRL: How do you balance tradition with innovation in your approach to rum-making or marketing?

At Meridian Rhum, tradition is our compass and innovation is the wind in our sails. We honor the centuries-old rum-making heritage of Marie-Galante — from the fields of sugarcane swaying under the Caribbean sun, to the time-tested distillation methods that give our rums their soul. At the same time, we embrace innovation by carefully curating exceptional rums and bottling them in mainland France with the pure volcanic water of

Auvergne, enhancing their character in a way that’s uniquely ours. In marketing, we weave these two worlds together — telling authentic stories rooted in terroir while presenting them through fresh, dynamic visuals and experiences that invite a new generation to discover rum not just as a drink, but as a voyage of the senses.

TRL: What are some recent initiatives or products you’ve launched that have been particularly impactful?

One of our most exciting recent initiatives at Meridian Rhum has been the launch of our inaugural collection — a celebration of both origin and discovery. At its heart is our Marie-Galante expression, a rum that captures the island’s essence: sun-drenched sugarcane, ocean breezes, and the craftsmanship of local distillers. To elevate it further, we bottle in mainland France using the pure, mineral-rich volcanic water of Auvergne, adding a signature touch that’s become part of our identity. Alongside this, we’ve introduced a series of limited-edition rums — each one chosen for its character, and ability to transport you somewhere new with every sip. The response has been incredible, with early accolades like a gold medal in Lyon and a silver medal in London affirming that our blend of tradition, terroir, and exploration is resonating with rum lovers everywhere.

TRL: How do you educate consumers about your rum, and what’s the most important lesson they should take away?

At Meridian Rhum, we believe every bottle should tell a story — not just of flavor, but of place, people, and passion. We educate consumers through immersive tastings, storytelling events that take them from the sugarcane fields of Marie-Galante to the volcanic springs of Auvergne, where we source our water for our rums. We share the heritage of traditional distillation, the artistry behind our blends, and the journeys that bring exceptional rums from across the globe into our collection. The most important lesson we hope people take away is that rum is far more than a spirit — it’s a voyage.

Every sip can transport you to another land, another culture, and another moment in time, if you take the time to savor it.

TRL: How do you manage quality and consistency as your brand grows and enters new markets?

At Meridian Rhum, managing quality and consistency is like tending a delicate garden that grows across continents. From the lush sugarcane fields of Marie-Galante to the pristine volcanic waters of Auvergne that we use in the bottling of our rums, every step is carefully nurtured. As we expand into new markets, we maintain a hands-on approach — forging strong partnerships with producers who share our passion for authenticity and craftsmanship, and overseeing each batch to ensure it meets our exacting standards.

This blend of tradition and meticulous attention guarantees that whether enjoyed in a trendy bar or a quiet home, every bottle of Meridian Rhum delivers the same rich story and unforgettable experience.

TRL: Can you share a collaboration or partnership that helped elevate your brand to new levels?

One of the most inspiring collaborations that truly elevated Meridian Rhum was our partnership with the artisan growers of Marie-Galante. Working closely with these passionate producers, whose generations-old techniques capture the island’s unique terroir, allowed us to infuse our rums with authentic French West Indies soul. Coupling their expertise with the purity of Auvergne’s volcanic waters during bottling in mainland France created a harmonious fusion of tradition and innovation. This partnership not only enriched our product’s character but also deepened our brand story — connecting people across oceans through craftsmanship, culture, and a shared love for exceptional rum.

TRL: What is your long-term vision for your rum brand, and how do you see your role in the evolution of the rum industry?

My long-term vision for Meridian Rhum is to craft a legacy that honors the rich heritage Caribbean rum while inspiring a new generation of enthusiasts to explore its depths with curiosity and passion. I see Meridian as a bridge — connecting the sun-soaked sugarcane fields of Marie-Galante with the volcanic waters of Auvergne, and reaching connoisseurs around the world who crave authenticity and discovery. In the evolving rum industry, I aim to be both a guardian of tradition and a pioneer of innovation, championing sustainability, transparency, and storytelling that brings every bottle to life.

Ultimately, I want Meridian Rhum to be more than a brand — to be a voyage, an experience, and a celebration of the craftsmanship and culture that make rum truly extraordinary.

TRL: What’s one piece of educational advice you would give rum lovers to better understand the spirit?

One key piece of advice I’d share with rum lovers is to embrace rum as a journey, not just a drink. Every bottle of Meridian Rhum whispers of Marie-Galante’s sun-drenched fields, the rhythm of traditional distillation, and the purity of Auvergne’s volcanic waters. To truly understand rum, take the time to savor its story — the land, the craft, and the people behind it. When you appreciate these layers, rum transforms from a complex spirit into an immersive experience that connects you to cultures, history, and artistry with every sip.

TRL: How can people learn more about you? Website? Social media page?
