Camikara just redefined expectations in the Indian premium rum space by earning the prestigious Rum Brand of the Year title at The Spirits Business Awards 2025 in London. As Hotelier India reports, this win marks the first time an Indian rum has taken the top global honor, outperforming long-established producers from the Caribbean, Latin America and other legendary rum regions.
India’s relationship with cane spirits runs far deeper than its modern whisky-drinking identity. Sugarcane grows abundantly from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, and for thousands of years, the country embraced cane-based beverages as part of everyday life.
Hotelier India points out that ancient references to sidhu in the Rigveda highlight India’s early mastery of sugarcane fermentation.
Colonial influence eventually shifted consumer preferences toward whisky, but India’s connection to cane spirits never faded—it simply paused, waiting for the right moment to resurface. Today, that moment has arrived.
During the past few years, India’s rum landscape has transformed. What many once viewed as a mass-market category now steps confidently into the global luxury conversation. Distillers across the country are embracing native sugarcane varieties, diverse terroirs and climate advantages to craft refined rums with a distinct identity.
As Hotelier India notes, modern producers such as Camikara are reclaiming global attention and reviving a legacy that always belonged to India. The rise of Indian premium rum signals a cultural return—not a trend.
Shalini Sharma, Head of Marketing at Piccadily Agro Industries Limited, emphasized the significance of the award in her comments to Hotelier India. She stated that Camikara’s focus on pure cane-juice aged rum, shaped by Indian terroir, challenges outdated perceptions of the category. She described the win as “a defining milestone for India’s rum category” and affirmed that it strengthens Camikara’s place as a serious global competitor.
Her final note captured the category’s shift: “We’ve gone from being overlooked to leading the conversation.”
Camikara’s achievement doesn’t represent a single victory—it signals a wider transformation. As India steps back into its cane-spirit legacy and consumers embrace more refined expressions, the Indian premium rum category positions itself for continued global relevance.
