TRL: What does the rum mean to you? What made you fall in love with rum and when did it happen?

TRL: Why is it important to educate the rum consumer?

Understanding rum is crucial because it’s deeply woven into Puerto Rican culture and history. If we view rum through a narrow lens, we risk undervaluing its significance. To prevent that, education is key. Learning about the various types, styles, and categories of rum allows us to appreciate its richness and diversity.

TRL: Any tips to train the palate and taste a good premium rum?

It’s not a shot. Appreciate it, enjoy it. Make a Sensorial Evaluation at first.

TRL: How can the rum contribute to improving the crisis in some countries?

Rum can potentially contribute to improving crises in some countries in a few ways, but it’s important to be aware of some potential drawbacks as well. Here’s a breakdown:

Positive Impacts:

– Economic Growth: A strong rum industry can create jobs in sugarcane cultivation, production, distribution, and tourism (rum tours, distillery visits). This can inject money into the local economy and improve livelihoods.

– Export Revenue: If a country can produce high-quality rum that’s in demand internationally, it can generate export revenue, which can be used for infrastructure development, social programs, and other areas.

– Cultural Identity: Rum can be a source of national pride and cultural identity. Promoting rum heritage and traditions can boost tourism and create a sense of community.

TRL: Is the commitment to sustainable development the key to success for the permanence of the rum industry in the world? Why?

Yes, a commitment to sustainable development is increasingly important for the long-term success of the rum industry worldwide. Here’s why:

– Resource Management: Rum production relies heavily on sugarcane, water, and energy. Sustainable practices help conserve these resources, ensuring a reliable supply for future generations.

– Environmental Impact: Sugarcane cultivation can lead to deforestation, soil erosion, and water pollution. Sustainable practices like responsible land management and water conservation can minimize these negative impacts.

– Consumer Demand: Consumers are becoming more environmentally conscious. Rum brands that demonstrate a commitment to sustainability are likely to resonate better with this growing market segment.

– Future Proofing the Industry: Climate change poses a threat to sugarcane production. Sustainable practices can help the industry adapt and mitigate these risks.

– Local Communities: Many rum-producing regions are island nations or developing countries.

Sustainable practices can benefit local communities by protecting ecosystems, promoting responsible waste management, and potentially creating opportunities for eco-tourism.

Overall, sustainability is not just about environmental responsibility, it’s also about ensuring the long-term viability of the rum industry.

TRL: Who would like to meet in the rum industry? What would you say to him/her?

There are always great exponents of the rum industry that I have met over the years and in every event that I participate in or attend, I will always meet great people and great rum enthusiasts, not only in Puerto Rico but from the entire world.

TRL: What are your next goals in the rum industry?

Europe and Asia, promoting the Puertorrican Rum.

TRL: Plans you have when you leave the rum industry.

Develop more educational programs about the rums, spirits, and mixology of the island.

TRL: Why is the role of the bartender important in the rum industry?

Bartenders play a critical role in the rum industry for several reasons:

– Brand Ambassadors: They act as ambassadors for rum brands. By expertly crafting cocktails and showcasing the versatility of rum, bartenders can introduce new customers to different rums and inspire them to explore beyond the basics.

– Educators: A good bartender is a rum educator. They can guide customers through the various styles, ages, and origins of rum, helping them discover flavors that suit their preferences. This education fosters an appreciation for the complexity of rum and expands the market.

– Trendsetters: Bartenders are often at the forefront of cocktail innovation. They experiment with new rum combinations, flavors, and techniques, creating exciting and trendy drinks that pique consumer interest and keep the rum scene dynamic.

– Customer Experience: Bartenders are the ones who directly connect with rum consumers. Their knowledge, passion, and skill in crafting delicious rum cocktails can create a memorable and positive experience, encouraging repeat visits and building brand loyalty towards rum in general.

– Sales & Revenue: Ultimately, skilled bartenders who promote rum effectively can drive sales and revenue for both rum brands and the bars they work at.

In essence, bartenders are the bridge between rum producers and consumers. They play a vital role in educating, engaging, and exciting people about rum, which is essential for the continued success of the rum industry.

TRL: What is your advice for new generations in the rum industry?

Education, practice, mentorship.
