Ardent Spirits, an independent whisky bottler, has acquired Dark Matter Distillers, Scotland’s pioneering rum distillery, for an undisclosed amount. This strategic move marks a significant milestone in Scotland’s distilling industry, as Dark Matter transitions into a new phase of growth under Ardent Spirits’ management.
Founded in 2015 by brothers Jim and John Ewan, Dark Matter Distillers carved its place in history as Scotland’s first rum distillery. As part of the acquisition, the distillery’s production operations have shifted to Ardent Spirits’ Burnobennie Distillery in Banchory, Aberdeenshire. The original Dark Matter distillery has since closed, but the brand’s legacy continues in its new location.
Ardent Spirits has retained Mike Roberts, Dark Matter’s former head distiller, to ensure continuity in crafting the signature rum. Additionally, the acquisition created a new role dedicated to managing the Dark Matter brand, with Simon Morrice stepping in to oversee the business segment.
Simon Morrice, wholesale and commercial manager, expressed the team’s enthusiasm for the acquisition. “We were inspired to acquire Dark Matter Rum because of its deep roots in Scotland’s distilling history. As the country’s first rum distillery, this brand pushed boundaries, and we are excited to take its journey forward under Ardent Spirits.”
Ardent Spirits has already noted a spike in demand for Dark Matter Rum, which is now accessible through a growing network of suppliers and Amazon.
The acquisition brings fresh energy to the Dark Matter brand, with Ardent Spirits planning to expand its product line. Upcoming releases include a coffee liqueur and a pineapple liqueur, both designed to offer unique flavor experiences to customers.
“This marks a new era for Dark Matter Rum,” Morrice added. “We remain committed to preserving its heritage while introducing creative innovations that delight our customers.”
Dark Matter Distillers has a history of bold ventures. Last December, the company auctioned the first nine bottles of its Biologist Series, following the success of its Physicist range in 2021, which fetched £41,800 (US$53,360) at auction.
As Dark Matter joins forces with Ardent Spirits, it embarks on a promising new chapter, blending its groundbreaking heritage with ambitious plans for the future.
