After half a decade of research, Planteray owner and master blender Alexandre Gabriel, together with spirits historian Matt Pietrek, has unveiled The Rum Never Sets: 300 Years of Royal Navy & London Dock Rum. As The Spirits Business reports, this work marks “the first major book dedicated entirely to navy-style rum”, blending archival research, technical detail, and storytelling to uncover the spirit’s naval roots and cultural impact.
The book traces navy rum’s evolution from its role as a daily ration aboard Royal Navy vessels to its influence on today’s global rum industry. Gabriel and Pietrek explored archives, naval records, and historic blending methods, also drawing inspiration from Royal Navy veteran Michael Fogg’s personal story. The result is an in-depth chronicle that captures both the technical craft and the human narratives behind navy rum.
To celebrate the book’s release, Planteray has launched Mister Fogg Sail No2, the latest in its navy rum series. Following the debut of Sail No1 last year, this expression builds on historical techniques and creative maturation.
The rum begins its journey aging in ex-Bourbon barrels in the Caribbean. It then sails across the Atlantic for further maturation at sea—mirroring how naval rations once traveled on Royal Navy ships—before arriving in southwest France. There, it rests in seasoned oak barrels and large open wooden vats along the river L’Antenne, recreating the cool, humid conditions of London’s traditional dockyards.
Bottled at a traditional navy strength of 55.7% ABV, Sail No2 delivers rich flavors of molasses, dark chocolate, vanilla, dried fruits, and warming spices. This limited-edition release retails for US$39.99 (€49.99).
Gabriel will embark on a Navy Rum Tour across Europe in autumn 2025 to promote both the book and Sail No2. The Spirits Business notes that the tour will feature masterclasses, tastings, and interactive sessions that spotlight the creative techniques and cultural heritage of navy rum.
Earlier this year, Planteray capped off its Terravera collection with Trinidad 2003 and introduced the Sealander expression to the US market. With The Rum Never Sets and Mister Fogg Sail No2, the brand continues its mission to honor tradition while innovating within the world of navy rum.
