Alcohol E-commerce to Surpass $36 Billion by 2028, According to IWSR

The online alcohol market is set to expand significantly, with IWSR projecting that Alcohol e-commerce sales will exceed $36 billion by 2028. This marks a 20% increase over the next five years, highlighting a shift from pandemic-driven volatility to a more sustainable growth pattern.

Digital Platforms Reshape Consumer Behavior

IWSR’s latest E-Commerce Strategic Study, which analyzed Alcohol E-Commerce across 18 major markets—including the US, UK, China, France, and Japan—reveals that digital platforms influence more than just online sales. Consumers increasingly use online research to guide in-store purchases, making a strong digital presence essential for brands.

In a recent article, Guy Wolfe, Head of E-commerce Insights at IWSR, emphasized the impact of digital platforms: “Alcohol E-commerce has evolved beyond transactions. Today, online channels are pivotal in shaping brand engagement and influencing offline sales.”

Alcohol E-commerce to Gain $6 Billion in Growth

Alcohol E-Commerce is expected to generate an additional $6 billion in revenue between 2023 and 2028. China’s online marketplaces and the US omnichannel sector will drive most of this growth, with markets in Australia, Japan, and Mexico also making significant contributions.

Spirits Lead the Way

The spirits category, particularly agave-based spirits and whiskey, is forecasted to dominate Alcohol Ecommerce growth. Wine and beer will also expand, with China and Italy playing key roles in their market performance.

Social Commerce Transforms Alcohol Ecommerce in China

China will remain a dominant force, contributing $1.9 billion in value growth by 2028. Social commerce platforms like Douyin (China’s version of TikTok) are redefining Alcohol e-commerce by combining entertainment with direct shopping. Unlike other regions where social media primarily serves as a marketing tool, China has integrated these platforms as key sales channels.

Even as China’s online user base slightly declines, e-commerce remains deeply ingrained in consumer habits. Tech-savvy shoppers continue to embrace digital platforms, ensuring a steady recovery in Alcohol e-commerce sales.

American Whiskey Drives US Online Alcohol Sales

In the US, Alcohol e-commerce continues to expand. According to IWSR’s Q3 2024 consumer survey, the percentage of alcohol buyers shopping online increased by four points over the past year. Millennials, in particular, are expected to drive future adoption.

Additionally, the frequency of online alcohol purchases has surged, with weekly transactions rising by 13 percentage points. American whiskey leads this growth, especially high-end Bourbon, rye, and American single malts, which account for a significant portion of forecasted gains.

Smaller Alcohol E-commerce Markets Show Modest Growth

Less developed Alcohol e-commerce markets are returning to pre-pandemic levels, with some regions seeing slower growth. The UK’s online alcohol sales, for instance, are expected to decline from their peak before rebounding in 2026.

Meanwhile, Japan, Australia, and Brazil will contribute significantly to global growth. Italy, in particular, is expanding rapidly as supermarkets enhance their online grocery capabilities. Consumer research indicates that Italy gained around half a million new online alcohol shoppers in 2024.

Consumer Behavior Stabilizes

Online alcohol shoppers are settling into more predictable patterns. Economic pressures drive value-seeking behavior, but many consumers still explore new brands through Alcohol Ecommerce platforms. In fact, 24% of online alcohol shoppers cite brand discovery as a primary reason for their purchases.

Ecommerce Becomes a Key Research Tool

Digital platforms are now a crucial part of the buying journey. A striking 63% of online alcohol buyers conduct thorough research before making a purchase. This trend extends to offline shoppers as well, reinforcing the role of digital ecosystems in purchasing decisions. Price comparison and product discovery rank among the top research motivations, further underscoring the importance of Alcohol Ecommerce in shaping consumer preferences.
