17-Year-Old Legend, The New Rum of Appleton Estate
Appleton Estate 17-Year-Old Legend Rum is an exquisite blend that offers a once-in-a-lifetime taste of cocktail history. The new expression is based on the original formula of the 17 Year Old rum made by J. Wray & Nephew on the estate in the 1940s.
The J. Wray & Nephew 17-Year-Old is known worldwide as the historical inspiration for the creation of the Mai Tai cocktail. Rum has become one of the most sought-after bottles in the world. Today, a tribute to this legend of cocktail history returns to the world stage as a limited offering, which is good news for rum connoisseurs and enthusiasts of classic cocktails.
Referencing original manuscripts and formulas, Master Blender Joy Spence created this expression by using four distillates set aside to rest on the estate to best recreate the taste profile of the original blend. Produced at Jamaica’s oldest continuously operating rum distillery, the iconic blend was aged for at least 17 years in the island’s fertile, tropical climate.
Appleton Estate rums age nearly three times faster than spirits aged in colder climates, allowing richer, fuller flavors to develop in a shorter period; in fact, the minimum age of 17 years in the tropical climate of Jamaica is equivalent to more than 50 years of age in a colder climate. Made with Jamaican limestone-filtered water and no added flavors, 17 Year Old Legend displays rich notes of caramelized pear and banana, blending with warm walnut, oak, and floral herbs.
The full-bodied crescendo culminates in a lingering, silky-smooth finish. The precious liquid is housed in the brand’s iconic glass bottles. 17-Year-Old Legend is the gift of one of the world’s oldest libraries of aged rum and will soon be a gem among the finest rum collections. Due to the rarity of the spirits, there are only 1,500 bottles available worldwide, never to be produced again.
