Distilleries to Visit

Appleton Estate

Located in Siloah, St. Elizabeth, southwest of Jamaica, Appleton Estate is one of the most recognizable spirits brands in the world. Established in 1749, it is Jamaica’s oldest continuously operating sugar farm and distillery.

The Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience, introduced in 2018, highlights the spirit profile defined by pot distillation and a limestone-rich water source. Tours run Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3: 30 p.m. and require reservations, and walk-ins are allowed.

Visitors start with a rum cocktail at the welcome center, then explore the property, operate the sugarcane mill, and receive a bag of sugarcane bits to take home.

Hampden Estate

Dating back to 1743, Hampden Estate is one of Jamaica’s oldest sugar estates. Although the rum brand is relatively new, emerging in 2017, the estate features a colonial mansion, tropical gardens, dunder tanks, muck pits, and its own sugar.

The estate’s strong pot still rum benefits from the rough landscape of Trelawny’s Cockpit Country, rich in limestone. It’s a rough thirty-minute drive from Falmouth Port cruise pier.

Due to difficult roads, it’s advisable to make reservations in advance. Tours start at 10 and 11 a.m (Monday to Friday).

Here are a couple of extra things you need to know:

  • Lunch is included.
  • As this is a working distillery, fully enclosed footwear is required. All tour guides are Certified First Aid Responders.
  • You must be 18 or older to go on the Hampden Rum tour.
  • Wheelchair facilities are not available on tour. However, they are available at the welcome center.

Clarendon

Located in Lionel Town, Clarendon Parish, the Clarendon Distillery and Monymusk rum are worth a visit.

Established in 1834, Monymusk Plantation has roots dating back to 1755. The Clarendon Distillery, built in 1949, is a state-of-the-art facility producing millions of gallons of bulk rum annually.

Owned by a joint venture between the Jamaican government, West Indies Rum Distillery (Maison Ferrand), Demerara Distillers, and Diageo, it produces Canerock Jamaican Spiced Rum. Innswood Distillery, a blending and maturing warehouse for Monymusk rum, located in Spanish Town, is also part of National Rums of Jamaica.

Worthy Park Estate

Nestled in Lluidas Vale, St. Catherine, Worthy Park Estate sits 1200 feet (0.37 km) above sea level. Despite the rough ride to get there, visitors are rewarded with breathtaking views over the cane fields.

The first record of rum production in 1741, and the distillery, built in 2005, is Jamaica’s smallest rum distillery, producing single-estate rum from cane to glass.

During a roughly 90-minute tour, you’ll learn about production, enjoy a rum cocktail and an immersive movie, juice your own sugarcane, and partake in a rum flight featuring their acclaimed Rum-Bar White Overproof Rum and Worthy Park Single Estate Reserve rums.

In addition, you’ll need to know that

  • You must be 18 and over to take the tour
  • The tours are unavailable on public holidays
  • To get the tour, you need a reservation.
