The New York World Spirits Competition (NYWSC) 2024 highlighted three exceptional rums that stand out for their quality, innovation, and tradition. These finalists not only reflect the diversity of the rum industry but also its global impact across more than 100 producing countries.

Star & Key Rum: Best Rum in the World 2024

Crafted at the Historic Labourdonnais Estate
Star & Key Rum, produced in Mauritius, was named Best Rum in the World for 2024. This premium rum hails from the Labourdonnais estate, a family-run property founded in 1856. Spanning 607 hectares of sugarcane fields and orchards, the estate seamlessly blends tradition with modernity.

The volcanic soil and subtropical climate of the island provide optimal conditions for cultivating sugarcane.

Artisanal Process with Mauritian Identity
The rum is made using fresh juice from red and yellow sugarcane grown on the estate. Distillation occurs in a Coffey column still located near the fields, ensuring the use of fresh ingredients. The rum is then aged exclusively in French oak cognac barrels for four years, imparting a rich and sophisticated complexity.

Unique Tasting Notes
This intensely amber rum delivers sweet aromas of toffee, butterscotch, vanilla, plums, and figs. On the palate, it is smooth and velvety, with flavors of burnt sugar, hazelnuts, apricot, and a herbal note reminiscent of French Caribbean agricole rums. Its long finish reveals cinnamon, chocolate, and toasted oak spices.

The NYWSC panel described it as: “Warm vanilla, caramel, and subtle spices, followed by toffee, oak, and tropical fruits.”

Palm Republic Rum: Best White Rum

A Tribute to the Tropics
Palm Republic Rum, a premium brand founded by actor Eric Winter, captures the tropical essence in its white and aged rums. This rum combines carefully selected distillates from Jamaica and the U.S. Virgin Islands, creating a harmonious balance of flavors from the Caribbean and Latin America.

Versatile Sensory Profile
This crystal-clear and light-bodied rum offers fresh banana, coconut, and vanilla aromas, accented by spicy hints of clove and nutmeg. Its creamy, smooth texture enhances flavors of sweet sugarcane juice, lime, and a touch of pineapple, finishing with refreshing citrus and subtle spices.

Perfect for Cocktails and More
Palm Republic Silver Rum is an ideal choice for classic cocktails like daiquiris and mojitos, though its smoothness also makes it enjoyable on its own.

The NYWSC panel highlighted its profile as: “Crisp and clean, with citrus, tropical fruits, and a refreshing finish.”

Pampero Aniversario: Best Dark/Gold Rum

A Venezuelan Legacy Since 1938
Pampero, founded by Alejandro Hernández and Luis Toro, is a Venezuelan rum excellence symbol. Its dedication to innovation, particularly in extended aging, redefined industry standards in the country.

An Anniversary Rum with Character
Pampero Aniversario, created in 1963 to mark the brand’s 25th anniversary, is a blend of rums aged in American white oak barrels that previously held bourbon and sherry. This aging process gives it a distinctive and complex profile.

Captivating Tasting Notes
With a deep amber hue, this rum exudes aromas of toffee, vanilla, and dried fruits, complemented by hints of leather and oak. On the palate, its creamy texture delivers flavors of dark chocolate, caramel, and cinnamon, balanced by a touch of clove. The finish is long, featuring vanilla and a subtle smoky note.

The NYWSC panel described it as:“Molasses, dark chocolate, and a hint of dried fruits.”
