“Well, now, yes, let’s raise our glasses. It’s time to enjoy the words of Master Ronera; Nancy Duarte. ”

Maestra ronera, Nancy Duarte (Source: Archivo RST)

Today we had the honor of trying a rum of 25 years and another of 6 years, directly from the barrel.

In our distillery, we have three different types of alcohols. The first is the alcohol of the first column, an aromatic liquid with captivating fruit notes. Then there is the neutral alcohol, which we also had the pleasure of trying, and finally, the alcohol post still  But there does not end the story, we enter the winery to discover the case of Santa Teresa 1796, a mixture of rums that range from 4 to 35 years.

It is important to mention that, according to the legislation in Venezuela, a rum must have a minimum of two years of aging to bear that name. However, we are not satisfied only with the aging time, but we go further with a solera process.

In the solera, a fascinating process occurs. We extract part of the rum from the last row and we fill it one by one the barrels in the form of a waterfall, from top to bottom. The third rum fills the fourth, the second fills the third, the first goes to the second, and we have 50% left that we will complement with the filling blend. During this process, our second aging takes place. To get each rum down to the end, it takes at least four months. We perform the movements every two months, so that when we extract the rum, a minimum of eight months of aging has already passed in this second process.

What do we get with this process? We achieve refinement, allowing all flavors to blend harmoniously. Let’s think of a wood-burning soup or a boiled one. Who has not enjoyed a boil the day after being prepared? Just delicious. As the flavors are absorbed and married, an incredible transformation occurs. The same ingredients, without adding anything else, are concentrated and balanced over time.

Another important aspect that we observe in the solera is that it is never completely emptied. There is always a part of the original rum that we filled in 1992, when we started the solera. This means that anywhere in the world where a bottle of Santa Teresa 1796 is found, traces of that original rum will be found. It is our Venezuelan legacy, something we should be proud of.

It should be noted that each bottle of our Santa Teresa 1796 rum has a special representation at its base: the cross of Aragua, an icon of our hacienda. This cross represents the four fundamental pillars of our brand: our history of more than 225 years, our origin in the Aragua valleys in Venezuela, the mastery achieved by our master rum makers and, of course, our purpose to be a tool of transformation and change in our environment.

Once the liquid has gone through the third aging, it’s time for the barrels. These French limousine casks, with a capacity of 18,000 litres, age the rum for an additional six months. Here we seek to achieve the final softness, that distinctive touch that characterizes our rum.

After this last step, the rum is ready to be bottled. Coby, a gannet who was deprived of liberty today is  our expert craftsman, carries out the waxing process. The bottle is submerged slightly in a boiler with hot wax and, with a skillful movement, Coby extracts the bottle, achieving the effect of a drop falling from the cap. This drop should be oriented towards the cracked oil in the bottles. Then, the bottles pass to the labeling tables, where the labels and the tax seal are placed on them. This is how our St. Teresa 1796 is completed.

This rum has been recognized by experts as the best rum made in the world. Every time someone enjoys our products anywhere in the world, they are experiencing a bit of Venezuela, and that is something that all of us should be extremely proud of.

After having gone through all this rigorous process it is time to delight and taste the final result.

Teacher, if I may, I would like to emphasize that this entire process is long, laborious and dedicated, but it requires patience and determination. As you said, greatness is not achieved by taking shortcuts. To obtain exceptional liquids, we need unique processes. And our Santa Teresa 1796 is unique, from its alcohols to the porcelain with which it is presented. He complements his student, Kharelys.

As you could see at every stage of this process, we are here to ensure the quality of our products, from the alcohols to the final result in the bottle. And most importantly, we not only care about today’s production, but we make sure to ensure quality for the next 10 years. Every rum you try today will be identical to the one we made 5 years ago and the one we’ll make tomorrow. To achieve this, we use our mastery and magic to mix previous vintages with current ones and get the same exceptional product you tried previously.
