The story of Ron Roble Viejo® begins with the dream of 4 friends who come together to create the best rum in the world. This group of nonconformists ventured to find the perfect formula, devoting themselves to developing a Venezuelan product of international quality.

TRL: Who is Giorgio Melis?

I’m a Chemical Engineer from the Universidad Central de Venezuela in Caracas. Married and have three children. I worked from the beginning at Industrias Pampero CA performing in all areas of the production plant, from Head of Production, Distillation, Fermentation, Quality Control and Aging, Development of new products, Purchasing, Engineering, Plant Management, and Operations Management, until reaching the position of Executive Vice President of the company. I had the opportunity to visit multiple companies worldwide to undertake the installation of the most modern plant in Venezuela in those years.

TRL: What does rum mean to you?

Rum for me has been practicing all my life since I have been in this field for more than 55 years and I continue to dedicate myself every day to improve. Being daily developing new formulas and mixtures is something that I am passionate about.

TRL: Three essential characteristics that define rum according to your perspective

It is a product that can be tasted at any time and occasion. It is also the drink that is best mixed. Excellent to drink pure or in cocktails!

TRL: What is the most important contribution you have made to the rum industry?

Dedicate my entire life to it and manage to impose the Roble Viejo Brand on a national and international level, thus contributing to the prestige of Venezuelan Rums.

TRL: Benefits that the rum industry has given you.

Rum brings me a lot of satisfaction and pride.

TRL: What’s another thing you are passionate about, in addition to rum? Why?

Sports in general and football in particular. It is one of the most watched sports in the world.

TRL: What is your favorite place for drinking rum?

Between friends socializing.

TRL: Why is it important to educate the rum consumer?

The more educated the consumer is, the more demanding he will be with the quality of the product and will require us, the Masters of Rum, to improve ourselves every day.

TRL: Any tips to train the palate and taste a good premium rum?

Practice a lot to educate the palate and thus be able to enjoy the quality of premium rums

TRL: How can rum contribute to improving the crisis in some countries?

Through excellence that will result in increases in exports

TRL: Is the commitment to sustainable development the key to success for the permanence of the rum industry in the world? Why?

The permanence of the rum industry in the world is guaranteed as long as the necessary quality raw materials are ensured to ensure that it can be maintained over time.

TRL: What plans do you have when you leave the rum industry? 

Rest and retire with a good drink of Roble Viejo.

 TRL: Why is the role of the bartender important in the rum industry?

The barman is a very important factor since it allows the consumer to know different ways of preparing cocktails to enjoy on any occasion.

TRL: What is your advice for new generations in the rum industry?

Dedication, patience, and love for the product. Over time the results come!
