Maison Ferrand introduced Planteray Mister Fogg Navy Rum, a rum mix that honors the legacy of Navy rum.

Mister Fogg’s rum is sourced from four major Caribbean rum-producing islands (Barbados, Trinidad, Guyana, and Jamaica). Historically utilized in Navy blends.

Limited to 500 copies, the rum launch is complemented by the comprehensive book co-written by rum historian Matt Pietrek and Maison Ferrand owner and master blender Alexandre Gabriel, titled Exploring 300 Years of Royal Navy Rum and Its Technique.

The Concept

This rum is a memorial to Michael Fogg, a veteran of the British Navy who joined ED&F Man, a rum supplier to the British Royal Navy, not long after he left the service.

He played a crucial role in the history of Navy rum, and his deep affection for it significantly shaped the writers’ understanding of the spirit.

The passion for reviving and sharing authentic Navy rum led to the creation of both the book and Navy Rum out of a deep interest in discovering lost spirits and their historical significance.

About “Exploring 300 Years of Royal Navy Rum and Its Techniques“, the book

Finding and examining old records over five years led to the publication of Exploring 300 Years of Royal Navy Rum and Its Techniques.

It includes a unique, in-depth examination of the complex production methods and rich history that characterize Royal Navy rum.

This 256-page book explores the history of this kind of rum’s manufacture, the customs, and traditions associated with its consumption.

Gabriel and Pietrek present a thorough and engrossing story that will enthrall rum lovers and historians alike, highlighting the seven pillars of Navy rum: blending rums from different countries, double aging, the use of used barrels, dynamic aging, Navy active vatting, issuing proof, and burnt sugar browning.

The Rum

Although Navy rum has no official definition, most rum specialists concur that it is a mixture of matured rums from two or more nations.

Planteray Mister Fogg Navy Rum is expertly crafted with rums from Barbados (West Indies Rum Distillery), Guyana (Diamond Distillery), Trinidad (Trinidad Distillers Ltd.), and Jamaica (National Rums of Jamaica).

After being aged in former Bourbon barrels in their home countries, the rums were shipped to the southwest of France in a manner that replicated the long-standing custom of dynamic aging on ships.

Once in the Cognac region, the mix is double-aged in secondhand oak barrels and then heavily oxygenated in big, open wooden vats, which mimic the damp British docks and aid in the maturation process. This procedure guarantees a rum with improved smoothness and a deep, mellow flavor.

Rich notes of molasses, dark chocolate, vanilla, dried fruits, and spices combine with other flavors in Planteray Mister Fogg to create a flavor profile that is perfect for cocktails as well as drinking.

At a robust 55.7% ABV, this rum pays tribute to the British Navy’s heritage while steadfastly meeting ancient Navy-proof requirements and catering to modern tastes.

Planteray Mister Fogg is an epic story full of rich history and expert workmanship, not just another rum. The edition will be retailing nationwide starting in July 2024 for suggested retail of $36.00 (55.7% ABV, 700ml).

The book is available for $35.00 at the Stade’s West Indies Rum Distillery Visitor’s Center and The Shop at Chateau de Bonbonnet in Ars, France, before its wide distribution.

Additionally, maybe some attendees are lucky enough to buy the book at Congress and the San Francisco Rum Festival.
