Omnicane Launches Major Philippe Rum to Enter Premium Spirits Market
Omnicane, a leading Mauritian sugar producer, has officially entered the premium spirits category with the launch of Major Philippe rum. The company described this move as a milestone in its diversification strategy, drawing on nearly 100 years of sugarcane expertise to craft what it calls a “distinctively Mauritian luxury spirit,” according to Just Drinks.
The Strategic Vision Behind Major Philippe Rum
Bertrand Thevenau, CEO of Omnicane’s retail, brands, and property units, explained the reasoning:
“Our analysis shows that premium, sustainably produced spirits from distinctive regions can command price premiums of 40–60% over standard offerings,” he told Just Drinks.
He added that Mauritius, already recognized for some of the world’s finest sugarcane, yields 12 tons of sugar per hectare compared to the global average of 9.5 tons. This advantage positions the island to compete in the upper tiers of the international spirits market.
Launch Plans for Major Philippe Rum
Omnicane plans to release Major Philippe rum in Mauritius by the end of the year at MRs2,300 ($50.83) per bottle. The initial lineup will feature four SKUs:
- Britannia – a pure cane juice white rum
- Mon Trésor – an oak-aged gold rum
- Ilot Brocus Spiced Rum – a spiced rum under the Ilot Brocus sub-brand
- Ilot Brocus Dark Rum Liquor – a sweet dark rum liquor set to launch next year
The company has already begun discussions with distributors in South Africa, Europe, and the UAE, with plans to expand into those markets within the coming year.
Distillation and Craftsmanship
CEO Jacques d’Unienville confirmed that Major Philippe rum will be distilled at Omnicane Ethanol Production, a subsidiary previously used for potable ethanol. By repurposing this facility, Omnicane ensures that the rum is crafted from locally grown sugarcane, emphasizing authenticity and a distinctive Mauritian flavor profile.
Thevenau expressed confidence that consumers will choose Major Philippe because of “its unique combination of locally sourced sugarcane, distinctive flavor, and proven craftsmanship,” as cited by Just Drinks.
Marketing and Distribution Strategy
Omnicane intends to focus primarily on the on-trade channel, allowing consumers to experience the brand in settings where they can fully appreciate its quality. Tastings, event sponsorships, and educational campaigns will form part of the rollout. At the same time, the company plans selective off-trade placements in duty-free shops, upscale liquor stores, and luxury retailers.
Growth Potential for Mauritian Rum
Export sales of Mauritian rum have risen 35% in value over the past five years, outpacing global industry growth. While the overall market share remains small—less than 1% of worldwide rum exports—Thevenau sees significant potential for expansion.
“Mauritius may be a small player globally, but this growth demonstrates strong momentum and international recognition,” he said in his remarks to Just Drinks. “With continued focus on premium positioning, distribution, and brand building, Mauritian rum can expand its presence worldwide.”
