Maverick Distilling Introduces Its First Barrel-Aged Rum
Maverick Distilling, known for its acclaimed Samuel Maverick White Rum, is expanding its portfolio with the release of its first barrel-aged rum. Named Samuel Maverick Barrel Aged Rum, this new addition matures in barrels that previously held whiskey, adding layers of depth to its profile.
From Cane Sugar to Aged Perfection
Starting with Colombian panela cane sugar and molasses, the fermentation takes place at Maverick’s San Antonio distillery. The rum is distilled using a hybrid copper pot and column still, then charcoal-filtered for smoothness and clarity. At this stage, it takes shape as a premium white rum, ready for the aging process.
Aged to Refined Complexity
The rum then ages for three years and ten months in Maverick’s whiskey barrels, which are stored in a subterranean vault at the distillery. This aging process enhances the rum’s character, resulting in a dark, sippable 80-proof spirit with a rich, layered profile.
The rum’s aroma introduces notes of oak, fresh leather, and vanilla. On the palate, flavors of honey, toffee, vanilla, and candied orange peel shine through, leading to a warm, slightly sweet finish with a touch of charred oak.
A Heritage of Craftsmanship
According to The Manual, Dr. Kenneth Maverick, founder of Maverick Distilling, draws on the region’s history with rum: “Rum arrived in Texas with Spanish colonists in the 16th century, later enjoyed by the Alamo defenders. After receiving a 93-point rating from Wine Spectator for our white rum, we decided to age it in our whiskey barrels, creating something unique.”
How to Purchase
Samuel Maverick Barrel Aged Rum, priced at $50, can be purchased at the San Antonio distillery or through the Maverick Distilling website.
