Lazy Dodo VSOP Rum Honors Legacy With New Premium Expression

Lazy Dodo Rum has introduced a new premium addition to its collection—Lazy Dodo VSOP Rum. Crafted at the Grays-owned New Grove Distillery in Mauritius, this latest release pays heartfelt tribute to the brand’s former managing director, Alain Vallet, honoring his legacy and passion for quality rum.

A Tribute to an “Old Pal”

The name “VSOP” stands for Very Superior Old Pal, a playful twist on the traditional brandy designation and a direct nod to Alain Vallet’s enduring influence on the brand. Grays’ rum and export business unit manager, Yannick Noel, explained to The Spirits Business:

“Paying tribute to Alain Vallet is at the heart of the creation of Lazy Dodo VSOP Rum. This tribute brings a deep authenticity and humanity to our approach, and we believe it will resonate strongly with our consumers.”

Complex Aging Creates a Distinctive Flavor Profile

To achieve its unique depth and character, Lazy Dodo VSOP Rum ages for at least four years in a blend of French oak, ex-Bourbon American oak, and ex-peated whisky casks. This diverse barrel combination delivers a rich complexity that appeals to modern rum drinkers.

The nose reveals bright aromas of yellow fruit, pineapple, sweet spices, and caramelized sugar. On the palate, it opens with notes of candied orange, light smoke, cinnamon, and citrus—a balance of tropical warmth and refined spice.

Launching With Island Elegance

Grays officially launched Lazy Dodo VSOP Rum on March 27 during an intimate event at La Plage by Evaco in Trou aux Biches, Mauritius. The event emphasized the rum’s roots in Mauritian heritage, its craftsmanship, and the emotional connection tied to its release.

More Than a Rum—A Story in a Bottle

Modern spirits enthusiasts are increasingly drawn to stories, not just spirits. According to Noel, this release embodies the brand’s philosophy:

“Today’s spirits lovers are looking for more than just a product: they want a story, an experience, a connection with the terroir and artisanal know-how. Lazy Dodo VSOP Rum offers a noble and sincere expression of Mauritian rum.”

With its layered profile and tribute-driven identity, the new VSOP brings both quality and emotion to the table—an experience that stands out in a growing premium rum market.

Expanding the Lazy Dodo Range

This release follows Lazy Dodo’s 2023 launch of three flavored rums—Grapefruit & Litchi with Pepper, Passionfruit & Mango, and Vanilla & Victoria Pineapple—demonstrating the brand’s continued innovation and versatility.

As the global rum scene continues to grow, Lazy Dodo VSOP Rum positions itself as a story-rich, high-quality offering that speaks to heritage, craftsmanship, and authenticity.
