Johnny Depp Debuts Three Hearts Rum with Personal Tattoo-Inspired Design

Rum has played a defining role in Johnny Depp’s career, from his iconic lines in Pirates of the Caribbean to his portrayal of Hunter S. Thompson in The Rum Diary. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Depp has launched Three Hearts Rum, a premium Caribbean-inspired spirit. He created the brand alongside his longtime friend Bobby DeLeon, moving beyond the typical celebrity spirit to craft something with deep personal meaning.

Honoring the Heritage of the Caribbean

Depp and DeLeon spent years developing the concept to honor both their personal bond and the traditions of the Caribbean. The Hollywood Reporter notes that the creative process gained significant traction after hurricanes devastated several islands in recent years. Consequently, the founders sought a way to support and spotlight local communities. Depp personally designed the bottle, incorporating symbols from his private Bahamian island, Little Hall’s Pond Cay, and his own physical tattoos.

Symbolism and Personal Philosophy

The Three Hearts Rum bottle features embossed imagery with profound significance to Depp. For example, a skull serves as a reminder to live fully, while a lightning bolt symbolizes enduring friendship. Additionally, the number three represents new beginnings, and three hearts honor the loves of his life. The base of the bottle displays the brand’s motto: “No Fear. No Malice. No Envy.”

A Tribute to Island Tradition

In a statement shared by The Hollywood Reporter, Depp explained that “Rum holds the history of the islands.” He emphasized that the hands of the people who grow the cane and age the spirit shape the final product. Bobby DeLeon added that they refused to rush Three Hearts Rum into the world, choosing instead to prioritize years of “patience and collaboration.” This respect for heritage remains the core of their partnership.

The Craftsmanship of a Seven-Year Blend

Regarding the liquid itself, DeLeon described Three Hearts Rum to Forbes as having a sticky toffee flavor with aromas of wood, spices, and candied orange. A distillery in the Dominican Republic produced the rum, aging it for five years in ex-bourbon barrels before re-casking it for two more years in former cognac barrels. This meticulous process results in a sophisticated seven-year-aged spirit that marks the first chapter of their Caribbean exploration.

Future Plans for Three Hearts Rum

The founders intend for Three Hearts Rum to lead into a broader study of Caribbean traditions in the coming years. By blending Depp’s artistic vision with traditional distilling techniques, the brand aims to elevate the category. As the spirit reaches the market, it invites drinkers to appreciate rum not just as a drink, but as a reflection of friendship and island history. Ultimately, Three Hearts Rum stands as a testament to Depp’s enduring love for the region.
