As a part of its Single Origin collection, Holmes Cay Rum added two new unaged spirits to its catalog—Rhum Agricole and Grand Arôme, both are special, small-batch rums distilled from native sugarcane. They are produced at Distillerie de Savanna on Réunion Island, a tropical island in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Madagascar.

The island features fertile volcanic soil that has yielded sugarcane for centuries. Indeed, the Savanna Distillery produces sugarcane juice and molasses-based rums. The brand’s founder, Eric Kaye, makes it his mission to bring flavorful and rare rums to the North American market, choosing rums from a wide range of fertile locations worldwide where sugarcane is grown.

What makes these unaged rhums unique is that they have not been sold in North America to date. Moreover, the Rhum Agricole and the Grand Arôme fit very well into the Holmes Cay Single Origin line profile, as they also offer exciting and accessible younger expressions to broaden serving opportunities.

About their production process, the Rhum Agricole is made from fresh pressed sugarcane juice distilled on a Savalle copper column still. Then, it is bottled unaged at 50% ABV. The expression features green pepper and olive notes on the nose, new grass and brine on the tongue, and fresh sugarcane sweetness on the finish.

On the other side, Grand Arôme Rum is a molasses-based, high-ester expression produced after a ten-day fermentation process. It is also distilled on the Savalle copper column still and bottled unaged at 57.5% ABV. On the nose, it has aromas of pickled green tomatoes and black olives, then subtle floral notes. On the palate, it has flavors of overripe tropical fruit, menthol, and salted citrus, with a long finish of sun-dried tomato and candied fruit.

In general, both distillates are delicious and distinctive expressions of the terroir of Réunion Island, excellent options to be sipped or used in cocktails that highlight their special qualities.

Holmes Cay rums are currently distributed in Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington, D.C. Likewise, they are available throughout the US via various online retailers.

Holmes Cay Rum offers a continuously evolving collection of the best small-batch, limited-edition rums, all distilled without additives. With its Single Cask rums and more accessible Single Origin expressions and blends, Holmes Cay has developed great spirits and shares them with discerning rum aficionados.
