From Manila to the World: ‘Maestro de Ron’ Atrophel Arquiza Elevates the Art of Bacardi Rum
The renowned “Maestro de Ron,” Atrophel “Troy” Arquiza, has returned to the Philippines to elevate the rum scene in Manila, showcasing Bacardi’s premium offerings at the Electric Garden event. Arquiza, who is the first Filipino Global Master Blender, has devoted over two decades to perfecting his craft with Bacardi, working in various locations including Jamaica and Puerto Rico.
The centerpiece of the event was the Electric Garden BGC, where an extensive bar transformed into a showcase of Bacardi specialties, including the Reservas Cuatro, Ocho, and Diez. Guests had the opportunity to taste these drinks both in cocktails and on their own, experiencing the different notes and complexities each one offers.
Arquiza trained under the mentorship of the legendary Jose “Joe” Gomez, who served with Bacardi for 41 years. Now, as his successor, he leads a team of rum blenders, overseeing the high quality of every drop of Bacardi that is sold around the world, a tradition that began nearly 160 years ago.
During the event, Arquiza spoke about the growing appreciation for aged rums in the Philippines, highlighting the diversity of Bacardi products, including some that he personally helped develop, such as Bacardi Ocho. He commented on the rich array of flavors that can be discovered in these premium rums, especially when enjoyed with a little ice or a drop of water, although he also emphasized the flexibility Bacardi offers for creating cocktails to the consumer’s liking.
On an intriguing note, he mentioned the possibility of experimenting with barrels made from Filipino mango wood for future productions, albeit admitting that the idea, though feasible, is in a very initial stage due to the limited availability of these trees.
Arquiza shared that the process of creating new blends is a delicate balance between understanding market preferences and exploring what blenders wish to create. While the Filipino market has traditionally gravitated towards mass products, Arquiza sees a growing trend towards a more sophisticated appreciation, especially with the introduction of aged rums like Bacardi Ocho.
