East Neuk Spirit Plans to Release a Series of Spiced Rum

This spring, East Neuk Spirit Company is set to launch a series of rums. Each spirit is linked to an area of Fife’s (a peninsula in eastern Scotland) darker history, evoking its unique heritage. Initially, the launch will include spiced rums, followed by sweet, herbal, and sour expressions.

East Neuk Spirit specializes in sourcing, blending, and bottling premium spirit releases. Its distillers combine natural ingredients to create their rums. These are imported from the Caribbean, and the blackcurrant and sea buckthorn used to sweeten the rum are from Scotland. Flavor profiles will include ginger, carob, cassia bark, star anise, sea buckthorn, and grains of paradise, among others.

After more than one year in the making, its founders, Rory Hunter and David Taylor, are ready to present Dorchadas, their flagship spiced rum. Its name comes from the Gaelic for “dark” and “mysterious,” which compliments the smuggling theme from which it is inspired.

The traditional pot still method is used to distill the Jamaican/Dominican blend, which keeps the rum’s origins and authenticity. Finally, it’s bottled at 75% ABV. Dorchadas rum is flavored with sea buckthorns alongside sweet and aromatic spices, creating a well-balanced and layered rum with a lasting mouthfeel.

They collaborated with Lewis Southern, the owner of Distillutions Limited and a master brewer, to develop their distinctive flavor. In addition, this expression has less sugar than the majority on the market, as they avoid syrups and colorings without losing their taste. Currently, it is being distilled at the Distillution distillery in Arbroath.

East Neuk Spirit is expected to launch the new expression at The Dreel Tavern in Anstruther in May, 2023. The company also announced that they are planning to release tequila or mezcal soon and that, in the long run, they want to set up a distillation plant in Fife.
