Diageo India Redefines Luxury with India Rare Spirits Program

Diageo India has taken a bold step in elevating its premium offerings with the India Rare Spirits program, a unique cask ownership experience designed for discerning collectors. This initiative shifts the focus from mass production to exclusivity, personalization, and craftsmanship, offering clients a bespoke journey into the world of fine spirits.

A Bespoke Cask Ownership Experience

Unlike traditional cask ownership models, Diageo India prioritizes hyper-personalization. Vikram Damodaran, Chief Innovation Officer at Diageo India, explained in a recent interview for The Spirits Business that the program allows clients to customize every aspect of their spirit, from selecting the base liquid to designing the final packaging.

“It’s similar to buying a luxury sports car,” Damodaran explained. “Clients don’t just pick a cask; they create a spirit that reflects their taste and identity.”

The process begins at Diageo India’s Ponda distillery in Goa, where clients experience an exclusive tasting session. They explore a collection of rare aged spirits—whisky, brandy, or rum—matured for over eight years. After selecting their preferred flavor profile, Diageo India’s expert blenders craft a tailored spirit using a proprietary system of 70 flavor blocks and a liquid library of 20,000 casks.

Infinite Possibilities for Personalization

Customization goes beyond the liquid itself. Clients design the bottle, label, cork, and packaging, ensuring every detail aligns with their vision. From family crests engraved on bottles to exclusive gift packaging, Diageo India ensures that each cask tells a personal story.

“For some, it marks a wedding or anniversary,” Damodaran shared for the magazine. “For others, it’s an investment in something rare and meaningful. Each cask represents more than a spirit—it embodies a legacy.”

Unlike conventional cask programs that offer pre-selected inventory, Diageo India guarantees full transparency and control over the final product. Clients receive exactly what they designed, eliminating uncertainty about aging timelines or inventory restrictions.

Luxury Beyond Price: The New Definition of Exclusivity

Diageo India challenges the notion that luxury is defined by price alone. Instead, the program emphasizes experience, craftsmanship, and exclusivity. According to Damodaran, high-net-worth individuals seek more than only expensive products; they desire experiences that reflect their identity.

This philosophy aligns with global trends where luxury buyers value customization, exclusivity, and immersive experiences over traditional status symbols.

Setting a Global Benchmark for Indian Spirits

Diageo India’s vision extends beyond the domestic market. Following the success of Godawan single malt, which expanded to eight countries within three years, the India Rare Spirits program aims to position Indian spirits on the global stage.

With the largest distillery footprint in India, Diageo India leverages the country’s diverse microclimates and indigenous ingredients to craft spirits that stand apart from traditional Scotch or Japanese whiskies. The program offers blind tasting sessions, where connoisseurs sample Indian spirits alongside premium Scotch and Japanese whiskies.

“When they realize they can’t tell the difference, that’s the moment we redefine expectations,” Damodaran revealed. “It’s not just about selling a cask—it’s about changing perceptions of Indian spirits.”

How to Join the India Rare Spirits Program

This invite-only experience is reserved for those who appreciate fine spirits and bespoke craftsmanship. As Damodaran put it:

“Some invitations don’t need asking for—they arrive, like a perfectly aged malt, in their own time.”

For those who value exclusivity, heritage, and Diageo India’s commitment to craftsmanship, the India Rare Spirits program offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create something truly personal and timeless.
