Cú Mara Marks a New Chapter for Scottish Rum
Levenbank Distillery and the team behind Loch Lomond Brewery have unveiled Cú Mara, a premium brand that expands Scotland’s presence in the rum category. The launch includes two expressions—a Golden Rum and a Spiced Rum—crafted with Caribbean molasses and pure water from the Scottish Highlands.
A Folklore-Driven Identity for Scottish Rum
Cú Mara takes its name from coastal legends and the mythical “Keeper of Lost Souls.” The Spirits Business notes that the team designed the brand around ocean imagery to evoke “a sense of depth and discovery,” signaling an intention to position the spirit as both modern and rooted in storytelling.
The brand plans to grow its lineup over time, adding a dark rum, a navy-strength bottling, and limited editions that explore various cask profiles. Levenbank Distillery’s extensive cask inventory—located near the River Leven in Dumbarton—will support this experimental approach.
Inside Cú Mara’s First Two Expressions of Scottish Rum
Both new rums sit at 40% ABV and retail for £40 (US$53). According to The Spirits Business:
- Cú Mara Scottish Spiced Rum offers a “complex” aromatic profile with “sweet vanilla,” plus “cinnamon and cloves.”
- Cú Mara Golden Rum leans into a “jammy fruit character,” underscored by “dried apricots and tropical fruits.”
These expressions highlight the brand’s hybrid identity—Caribbean-inspired production paired with a uniquely Scottish sense of place.
Producers See Room for More Scottish Rum Innovation
Euan MacEachern, head of production at Loch Lomond Brewery, told The Spirits Business:
“The rum market is seeing strong growth and we saw an opportunity to create something distinct and extend our portfolio in a fresh and exciting way. A premium, small-batch Scottish rum that combines classic Caribbean inspiration with our own very distinct production style.”
His statement reflects the wider momentum behind Scottish rum, which continues to expand beyond niche experimentation into serious craft territory.
Levenbank Distillery’s Broader Vision
Founded in early 2025, Levenbank Distillery has already built a diverse spirits portfolio. The distillery produces three core styles of Lowland single malt whisky, using a mix of barley varieties and beer-inspired yeast strains—including specialties like crystal and chocolate malts. It plans to release its first single malts in 2030/31.
In addition to whisky and Scottish rum, Levenbank also crafts gin and vodka under its West Highland Spirits brand, reinforcing its ambition to shape multiple categories within the UK craft spirits scene.

With Cú Mara, Levenbank Distillery signals its intention to carve out a meaningful role in the evolving Scottish rum landscape. The brand blends storytelling, craftsmanship, and innovation—setting the stage for continued experimentation and growth in the years ahead.
